Porto di Levante and finding your way around Vulcano Porto

The INGV Punto Informativo is located at Porto di Levante in the centre of Vulcano’s built-up area. At the same time, it lies along the access routes to Gran Cratere and Vulcano’s historic centre. The local area therefore connects the harbour setting with the paths leading to both destinations.

Porto di Levante is the passenger harbour of Vulcano Porto for ferries and hydrofoils. Ferries to Vulcano depart from the harbour of Milazzo and the harbour of Naples. From Porto di Levante, a route also leads in a south-westerly direction from the town centre to the end of the shopping street. The route therefore extends from the passenger harbour through the town centre to the end of the shopping street.

Crater paths and volcanic landscapes

The path to Gran Cratere di Vulcano is almost 7 kilometres long and takes around three hours for the return journey. The approximate duration includes the route in both directions and makes the tour a separate, longer part of the day. For planning the day, the complete return journey is therefore already included in this timeframe. The crater-rim path can be walked all the way around. It reaches a highest point of almost 400 metres above sea level and offers views across the entire Aeolian archipelago.

An asphalt road leads from Porto di Levante to the Vulcanello peninsula. It is one of Vulcano’s three original eruption centres. In the Valle dei Mostri, lava-rock formations shaped by water and wind lie on fine black sand. The asphalt road to the peninsula therefore has a different surface from the fine black sand of the Valle dei Mostri. The lava-rock formations were shaped by water and wind.

Thermal springs and warm natural experiences

The natural warm thermal mud bath on Vulcano was opened to the public in the 1960s after the surface crust had been removed. The Pozza dei Fanghi is considered a freely accessible open-air thermal spring. The removal of the surface crust is part of the development history of this warm thermal area.

Spiaggia delle Fumarole in the Bay of Ponente

Spiaggia delle Fumarole is located within the Bay of Ponente. The water at Spiaggia delle Fumarole on Vulcano is warmed by sulphurous vapours. At the same time, the beach is protected by a rock wall and Mediterranean scrub. The rock wall and Mediterranean scrub frame the beach on the landward side, while the sulphurous vapours warm the water.
