San Marco d'Alunzio between Monte Castro and the Tyrrhenian coast

Ancient and Norman traces

One of the most striking historical testimonies is the Tempio d'Ercole. The Greek temple from the 4th century BC is considered an important example of classical architecture in the Messina area. It stands on a rocky terrace opposite the town of San Marco d'Alunzio and is in a good state of preservation.

The ruins of the Norman castle on Monte Rotondo were built by Roberto il Guiscardo from 1061 onwards on the remains of an older castle. Due to its strategic location, the castle served as an important military outpost for controlling and dominating the Tyrrhenian coast from Cefalù via Capo d'Orlando to the Aeolian Islands. From the beginning of Via Roma, you can reach the ruins on foot via Via Castello. The ascent on Via Castello is approximately 500 m and is considered free of architectural barriers.

The Museo della Cultura e delle Arti Figurative Bizantine e Normanne is located in a former Benedictine monastery. Its departments include archaeology, Byzantine-Norman art and the Middle Ages in the Nebrodi. The archaeological department's collection includes, among other things, a sacrificial altar dedicated to Augustus, a Corinthian terracotta capital and finds bearing Greek and Latin inscriptions. The department of Byzantine-Norman art displays valuable frescoes depicting the four Church Fathers of the Christian East and a reconstructed pictorial cycle from the apse of the Norman church of S. Salvatore extra moenia.

Churches, art and squares in the town

The Chiesa di San Giuseppe is a single-nave church built from the 16th century onwards, with six side chapels and a Baroque portal with Corinthian capitals. Since 1996, it has housed the Museo di Arte Sacra. The Chiesa di San Basilio contains a 17th-century wooden statue of Saint Basil the Great, created by the Li Volsi family from Tusa.

The Chiesa di Sant'Antonio also combines architecture and art history: the 17th-century single-nave church has a valuable façade made of red San Marco marble. Inside are a 15th-century crucifixion statue and a painting by Damiano de Basilio from the late 16th century depicting the Madonna with angels. The Chiesa Maria Santissima Aracoeli was built in the 12th century and remodelled and extended in 1494 and 1630. It houses the crucifix; the procession in its honour is considered to have been established in 1612.

The Chiesa Madre San Nicolò di Bari stands in the medieval quarter of San Marco d'Alunzio and was built between 1584 and 1800. It comprises twelve side chapels from the 16th century, richly furnished with paintings, wooden statues and other valuable works of art. The Fontana in marmo rosso San Marco stands in Piazza Aluntina; it was built in 1897 from locally sourced red marble.

Science, trails and festivals

For families, IDEA offers a special complement to the historical sights. IDEA is the first science museum in the Parco dei Nebrodi and is located in the historic Palazzo Crimaldi. The IDEA Museo della Scienza e della Tecnologia offers more than 30 interactive wooden exhibits and around 100 geometric origami models, presenting mathematics and physics in a fun way. San Marco d'Alunzio also offers trekking trails and an equipped park for sporting activities.

WOOD takes place every year on 1 May in the heart of the Parco dei Nebrodi. San Martino Nel Borgo includes the „Vino Fatto in Casa“ competition and the Mastro Vinaio Aluntino, which took place in 2024 in its 4th edition, as well as tastings of selected wines from Sicilian, Italian and French wineries. The Giornata Medievale includes a wine tasting, a medieval aperitif in the Taverna del Borgo and a market for handcrafted products. During the Festa del Crocifisso, 33 veiled penitents, the Babbaluti, carry the crucifix in a procession.
