Militello Rosmarino combines a medieval character with sacred art, ancient festival traditions and a distinctive landscape. The historic centre lies on a hill above the valley of the Torrente Rosmarino. Its town layout is divided into two areas connected by a narrow corridor. The oldest part of the historic town structure lies around the Norman Castle. In 1371, Militello and its castle were confirmed again. Numerous Trazzere and mule tracks cross the area, forming a network between the town centre and the rural settlements.

The Chiesa del Rosario was established from 1484 by the Barons Rosso; a Dominican monastery was later attached to it. Among the significant works of art in the churches of Militello Rosmarino is the Madonna col Bambino by Pietro Novelli. Beneath the Chiesa Madre, the crypt preserves the mummies of figures from the 18th century, as well as painted wooden niches and sarcophagi.

Festa di San Biagio and living traditions

The traditional Festa di San Biagio is also celebrated in Militello Rosmarino on 3 February. The Festa di San Biagio includes the traditions of “SCIARA CA RAMA” and “CANNIZZOLI”, which take place in the town’s streets. A Sciara is a procession in which children carry bundles of burning wild reeds through the streets. It takes place between January and February before the procession of San Biagio.

The ancient Processione del simulacro di San Biagio follows the town’s main street. A characteristic element is the “Run of the Saint”. The ancient abbey of Santa Maria Lo Brignolito is opened only for the Festa di San Biagio. During L'ottava di San Biagio, the procession stops at the site to sample a dish made with mortadella, salted sardines, bread, olives and red wine. An old tradition of this festival octave is to go to a hill in the Contrada Cuttunaro.

The Presepe vivente dei Nebrodi is also part of the town’s event history: the first edition took place in 1998.
