Mountain setting and historic buildings

Enna’s historic centre is situated on a mountain. Steep drops surround it, forming a natural defensive wall. Rocca di Cerere is a limestone peak that is almost entirely isolated from the rest of the mountain. Its upper section was shaped during the Classical period as a sacred temenos of Demeter and Kore. Geological features and an important connection to the Classical period therefore meet directly in the landscape.

Castello di Lombardia is a pentagonal castle with square towers on the mountain above Enna and, at the same time, a castle in the city’s immediate surroundings. Of the twenty imposing towers, the remains of six are visible today. Three of them are almost intact, including the Pisana, also known as Torre delle Aquile. The complex thus provides a tangible impression of how strongly its historic form continues to shape the perception of Enna today.

Torre di Federico is one of the best-preserved Frederician monuments in Italy. The tower is 27 metres high, has an octagonal floor plan and stands on a wooded hill on the Enna plateau at an altitude of more than 950 metres. From its summit, views extend in every direction across the city.
