Mineo between history and culture

Mineo brings together different layers of history: at the Museo Civico “Corrado Tamburino Merlini”, the exhibits range from Palaeolithic flint tools and bones of prehistoric animals to Bronze Age tools, finds from various tombs, ceramics and jewellery.

The Casa Museo Luigi Capuana preserves original architectural elements and furnishings, memorabilia and photographs, manuscripts, as well as handwritten documents. Interactive stations and multimedia installations incorporate new findings from recent biographical studies and studies of his work. The collection also includes more than 2,300 volumes: 1,342 date from the 19th century and 976 from the 20th century. In addition, there are rare editions, including two Cinquecentine, seven editions from the 17th century and 44 editions from the 18th century.

Churches, gates and traces of history

The Church of Santa Maria Maggiore stands near the ruins of the old Ducezio Castle. On Via Roma, the Church of San Francesco d'Assisi e dell'Immacolata has a stone portal from the 15th century. Porta Adinolfo is the only surviving one of Mineo’s five medieval gates. It was restored in 1746 and dedicated to Adinolfo, who led the uprising of the Sicilian Vespers in Mineo.

The Historical Archive of Mineo also reaches far back into the past. It preserves more than 800,000 documents from the period between 1409 and 1960, with some gaps. Piazza Buglio is also home to a work by Vincenzo Torre da Nicolosi, created in Rome in 1934 and inaugurated in 1936.

Antiquity in Rocchicella

The Rocchicella archaeological area is considered the site of the sanctuary of the Palici and the city of Paliké, which ancient Greek and Latin authors located there. The area includes the remains of the Estaterion and a museum with archaeological finds recovered on site.
