Ulassai is presented as an open-air museum where urban architecture, nature and works of art are interconnected. This very combination makes the town an interesting destination: contemporary art, Maria Lai’s personal and artistic journey, distinctive karst rocks and Ogliastra cuisine offer different ways to experience it.

Art and local history in Ulassai

The Stazione dell’Arte is a contemporary art museum dedicated to Maria Lai’s personal and artistic journey. The CaMuC – Casa Museo Cannas is also a contemporary art museum and is located in the heart of Ulassai’s historic centre. Together, the two places give art in Ulassai a tangible form, with Maria Lai and contemporary art at the centre.

The CaMuC – Casa Museo Cannas was built in the early years of the 20th century and had a major influence on Ulassai’s social and economic history. In 1981, Maria Lai created “Legarsi alla montagna” in Ulassai, one of the first relational art actions in Italy. For this work, a blue ribbon approximately 27 kilometres long was cut into pieces, distributed and attached between the town’s houses until it reached Monte Gedili.

Grotta Su Marmuri, Tacchi and trails among karst rocks

The landscape also makes a clear impression. Grotta Su Marmuri is approximately 850 metres long and reaches heights of up to 70 metres. The evergreen forests of the Tacchi are home to wildlife protected by the Oasi faunistica di Girisai.

The limestone Tacchi near Ulassai are a destination for free climbers from all over the world. In Ulassai, visitors can also follow dozens of other trails among the karst rocks. Free climbing and walking the trails draw attention to the shapes of the karst rocks and offer two active ways to experience the landscape.

Regional cuisine as part of your stay

The local character also includes the Su Bullicciu restaurant, which serves a lunch of typical Ogliastra cuisine inside the cave. Dining in the cave adds a regional touch alongside the rock formations.

Choose a holiday apartment in Ulassai based on your travel interests

When choosing a holiday apartment in Ulassai, the most important factor is how you want to allocate your days. If your travel group has different interests, the destination offers several clearly defined focal points: contemporary art and local history, rocky landscapes and trails, protected wildlife, or a lunch featuring Ogliastra cuisine. This allows you to plan your stay around focused art experiences, outdoor activities, nature-related interests and regional food, without reducing Ulassai’s different sides to a single type of trip.
