Arzana lies at the foot of Monte Idolo. The town combines mountain landscapes, water, forests and traces of different eras. This creates a destination where active trails, nature observation and cultural discoveries can be combined. A holiday apartment in Arzana is therefore an interesting choice if you do not want to limit your stay to just one type of experience.

Mountains with trails and viewpoints

At 1,833 metres above sea level, Punta La Marmora is the highest peak in Sardinia. The summit can be reached via hiking trails such as the Gennargentu T-721; along the way there are numerous viewpoints and areas equipped for resting. Punta La Marmora is also part of the Site of Community Importance „Monti del Gennargentu“ (ITB021103) within the Natura 2000 network. This combination appeals both to hikers and to people who want to experience a mountain landscape through viewpoints and breaks.

Water, forests and wildlife

The Pirincanes gorge forms freely accessible pools of crystal-clear water known as the „Cauldrons of the Giants“. The Sardinian trout and the Sardinian brook salamander are found in the waters of Pirincanes. The Rio 'e Forru waterfall is a natural feature of Arzana in Gennargentu Park. Three yew trees stand in the Tedderieddu forest and are considered among the oldest in Europe. The Funtana Orrubia mountain spring lies in the natural area of Arzana. Mouflon, wild boar and deer live in the forests of the Flumendosa valleys.

Archaeology, churches and townscapes

The area’s cultural history is also closely connected with the landscape. The archaeological site of Nuraghe e villaggio di Ruinas comprises a trilobed nuraghe, the remains of a sacred well and around 200 circular huts. It can be reached via the SS 389 and then along a signposted paved road. The area of Arzana was already used during the Nuragic period; the necropolis with Domus de Janas at Perdixi provides evidence of this early use. Remains from the Roman era and a thermal complex were discovered at Su Baingiu within Arzana. The present parish church of San Giovanni Battista dates from 1860 and preserves a medieval cross made of Silisé as well as a monstrance from the 17th century. The Church of San Martino has a small bell gable and a round opening on its façade. Five photographs by Oliviero Toscani of the town’s centenarians are displayed along the streets of Arzana.
