Holiday apartment in Sanluri – History, bread and Sardinian experiences
Accommodation in Sanluri
Sanluri combines impressive history with Sardinian food culture and unique experiences.
History among the Castello, borgo and monastery
The Castello Giudicale Eleonora D’Arborea was built by Pietro IV d’Aragona by royal decree dated 27 July 1355. It currently houses collections on the Risorgimento and the First World War. The memorabilia includes, among other things, items relating to Garibaldi, weapons, field equipment, newspapers and the tricolour that flew over Trieste in 1918 when the city was returned to Italy. The Castello also has a collection of artistic wax figures comprising more than 400 works from the 16th to the 19th century.
Another historical perspective is offered by the Museo Storico Etnografico dei Padri Cappuccini. It is housed in a monastery built on a hill from 1608 onwards and displays illuminated choral manuscripts, psalters belonging to the friars, papal decrees dating from the 16th century onwards, relics, statues of saints, tabernacles and monstrances. The exhibition also includes an archaeological collection with finds from the Neolithic period as well as from the early Christian and Byzantine eras. The church of Nostra Signora delle Grazie was renovated in the 18th century on the remains of a 16th-century church; only the lower part of the bell tower of this older church has survived. The medieval fortified borgo of Sanluri had a circumference of no more than 1,600 metres.
Civraxu, Sardinian beer and traditional cuisine
The Museo del Pane e panificazione del Civraxu focuses on the rural customs surrounding the production of Sanluri’s typical bread, Civraxu. The museum is divided into five sections and covers the product’s early history, working the land, and the stages of mixing, rising and baking. Upon request, it offers bread-making workshops for pupils and adults. In addition, Birrificio Nanumoru in Sanluri offers a visit with a tasting of craft-brewed Sardinian beers. A guided brewery tour can be booked at the Birrificio with advance reservation. Coxinendi also offers a workshop and a show kitchen on traditional Sardinian cuisine, where typical dishes are prepared and tasted.
Festivals with a historic and local character
Sa Battalla is a historical re-enactment held every two years and organised by the town of Sanluri together with the local Pro Loco. It focuses on a historic battle that took place on 30 June 1409 in the Sanluri area between the armies of Aragon and the Judicate of Arborea. The Festa del Borgo usually takes place on the last Sunday in September and brings Sanluri’s historic crafts, customs and flavours back to life.
