Holiday apartment in Gesturi: Giara, churches and Sardinian traditions
Accommodation in Gesturi
Holiday apartment in Gesturi between the town centre and the Giara
In Gesturi, nature, early history and Sardinian traditions come together. The Giara di Gesturi shapes the character of the landscape, while historic churches and the Casa di Fra Nicola preserve tangible traces of religious and everyday life. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Gesturi, you can therefore plan your trip around two main focuses: discovering the landscape or exploring the town’s culture and festivals.
Wild horses and bike tours on the Giara di Gesturi
The Giara di Gesturi has been a Site of Community Importance since 1995 because of its plant and animal life, which has disappeared elsewhere and is distinctive due to its isolation. It is known for a colony of wild horses considered unique in Europe. The Giara also offers extensive bike tours through unspoilt nature, with places where prehistoric remains have been preserved. The landscape therefore offers both nature experiences and access to traces of the past.
Churches, everyday life and historic traces
The Casa di Fra Nicola is located in Gesturi’s historic centre, just a few metres from the parish church. Furniture and everyday objects have been preserved there, illustrating domestic life and agricultural work at the end of the 19th century. The Chiesa di Santa Barbara is the oldest church in Gesturi; two building blocks bearing the year 1473 and the inscription “Hoc fecit Badinus” have been preserved on it. The Chiesa Parrocchiale di Santa Teresa d’Avila also stands in the centre, with a 30-metre-high bell tower. A few kilometres from Gesturi, the Chiesa della Madonna d’Itria, dating from 1620, is located in a forest with centuries-old trees.
Bruncu Madugui and the early Nuragic period
The protonuragic complex of Bruncu Madugui dates from the beginnings of Nuragic civilisation and is dated to the 16th to 14th century BC. Bruncu Madugui is considered a prototype of the architectural typology of corridor pseudo-nuraghi. About 100 metres away are the remains of a village whose huts were joined together into settlement blocks. The Fondazione Altopiano della Giara organises guided tours of the Bruncu Madugui protonuraghe on the Giara di Gesturi.
Festivals, handicrafts and typical products
The celebrations of the Madonna d’Itria begin at Pentecost and last for three days. They include a procession with ox-drawn Traccas, during which the statue of the Virgin Mary is carried out of the parish church. During the festival, pilgrims watch over the statue with singing and prayers. The Holy Week celebrations in Gesturi also include processions and religious songs in Sardinian. Local特色 also includes the traditional production of baskets made from mastic shrub and reeds. Gesturi’s agriturismi offer typical products such as sheep’s and goat’s cheese.
