Porto Pinetto: Coast, Lagoons and Caves
Accommodation in Porto Pinetto
Porto Pinetto between Coast and Wetland
Porto Pinetto is a seasonal coastal settlement with a tourist character and a low-lying, sandy coast in places. The coastal landscape extends from the coastal wetland system of Stagno di Is Brebeis to rocky sections and the caves at the bay. The coast is therefore not limited to a single type of shoreline.
Lagoons, Dunes and Rocky Coastlines
The Natura 2000 site SIC ITB040025 “Promontorio, dune e zona umida di Porto Pino” also includes the contiguous coastal system of Porto Pineddu. The coastal system of Porto Pineddu includes a rocky coastal section between Porto Pinetto and Paris Sarri. In the protected area including Porto Pineddu, coastal lagoons, shifting dunes and fixed coastal dunes are among the habitats. The landscape thus combines rocky shores, shifting sand formations and fixed coastal dunes.
Porto Pinetto lies beside the coastal wetland system of Stagno di Is Brebeis and the fish-farming facility of Porto Pino. In 2025, Porto Pinetto in Sant’Anna Arresi is one of the bathing-water sites; there, the place is designated as Porto Pineddu.
Beach and Snorkeling Experiences
Near the group of houses in Porto Pinetto lies a small beach known as Spiaggia dei Francesi or Sa Bua. Access is via Via Porto Pinetto and then left onto Via del Ginepro. After approximately 800 meters, an open area follows, preceded by a few buildings; from there, the beach path continues.
A snorkeling route begins at Porto Pinetto beach and follows the cliff to an accessible cave with two openings admitting light and a narrow rock pillar whose gap is only finger-width. The route also passes through a narrow pyramidal entrance to Grotta Viola. Hard sponges found in the cave occur exclusively in violet. The two openings admitting light and the narrow rock pillar with its finger-width gap belong to this accessible cave; the narrow pyramidal entrance belongs to Grotta Viola. The route therefore combines cliffs, unusual rock formations and access to another cave.
Caves, Paths and Coastal History
Grotta dei Baci is a coastal cave approximately 14 meters high at the eastern tip of the bay. A coastal hiking trail reaches Porto Pinetto via an unpaved road.
Porto Pinetto is also known as Candiani; the name derives from the ruins of a military battery dedicated to Admiral Candiani. On Punta Menga at the end of the Porto Pineddu promontory, there are also the ruins of a coastal defense battery against ships dating from the Second World War. For those interested in culture, the coastal defense against ships on Punta Menga remains the specific historical reference.
