Sacred Architecture and Historic Walls

The Cattedrale di Santa Chiara was built between 1284 and 1288. Its surviving original structural elements illustrate the transition from Romanesque to Gothic forms in their Sardinian expression. The bell tower preserves a special detail: it contains a bronze bell dated 1337 and signed by Andrea Pisano.

The walls known as the “Pisan Walls” surround the historic centre of Iglesias. The Museo Diocesano is also part of the city’s sacred history. It houses a large part of the so-called cathedral treasury, meaning particularly valuable sacred objects belonging to the cathedral. The Museo Diocesiano is a museum located in the immediate vicinity of Iglesias.

Mining History from Different Perspectives

The Cammino Minerario di Santa Barbara is a historic, cultural and religious trail through the Sardinian Geomining Park along former mining paths in southwestern Sardinia. It is 500 kilometres long in total and runs in 30 stages.

Several museums also explore the history of mining. The Museo dell'Arte Mineraria is a museum located in the immediate vicinity of Iglesias. The Miniera di Monteponi is likewise a museum located in the immediate vicinity of Iglesias. Porto Flavia was used as a loading facility to load heavy minerals directly onto ships at sea.

Castles, Caves and Coastal Landscapes

The Castello del Salvaterra is a castle located in the immediate vicinity of Iglesias. The exhibition at Castello di Salvaterra includes weapons, armour, war machines and instruments of torture used in inquisitorial proceedings. This means the cultural range extends from medieval sacred history to military and judicial topics.

Several different types of landscape are the focus of days spent in nature. The Passeggiata panoramica di Nebida is a viewpoint located in the area around Iglesias. The Grotta di Santa Barbara and the Grotta San Giovanni are caves located in the area around Iglesias. The Spiaggia Fontanamare is a beach located in the area around Iglesias.

Pan di Zucchero is also one of the distinctive natural features: two tunnel-like caves there provide habitats for seabirds. If you choose your accommodation based on your travel group’s interests, you can focus on historic interiors, mining trails, viewpoints, caves or coastal landscapes without limiting yourself to a single holiday theme.
