Discover history, language and the townscape
The Museo civico Casa del Duca is housed in a restored fort dedicated to Carlo Emanuele III, built in 1738 together with the first buildings of the emerging settlement of Carloforte. At the museum, you can see models of a tuna-fishing facility and a 19th-century tuna-processing and canning factory. The exhibition is complemented by a plan of Carloforte's first district drawn by the engineer Augusto De la Vallée.
The history of the island of San Pietro is presented at the Museo Multimediale Torre San Vittorio using touchscreens and 3D simulations, from its geological origins to its settlement in 1738. The visit ends on the tower's top floor at a viewpoint offering a 360-degree panoramic view. The Polo Linguistico Tabarchino offers another perspective on regional identity, with a multimedia exhibition about the Genoese origins of the Tabarchino language and its influences from the Mediterranean region.
The historic centre of Carloforte is criss-crossed by narrow streets and shady alleyways known locally as caruggi. On the edge of the settlement stands the late-Baroque Chiesa dei Novelli Innocenti. Since 1998, the Atelier of Oriana Bassani has been located in Via Venti Settembre, in the heart of the historic centre. It offers watercolours, oil paintings, portraits of Latin sailing boats, nautical charts, compass roses and handcrafted maritime objects.
A distinctive tradition is the Festa della Madonna dello Schiavo, held every year on 15 November. During the procession, the image of the Madonna dello Schiavo is carried from the sanctuary in Via XX Settembre through the town's streets. If you plan your trip accordingly, you can experience Carloforte in a religious and community-focused setting as well.
Nature between salt pans and coast
The salt pans of Carloforte are a Site of Community Importance (SCI), home to some of Sardinia's most significant avifaunal rarities. The via del sale, located close to the town, runs around the salt pans as a nature trail through the landscape. The route is suitable for birdwatching and jogging, offering a different holiday perspective from the museums and alleyways in the centre.
The coast also offers striking features. Le Colonne are trachyte rock pinnacles that were declared a natural monument in April 1993. A coastal walk from the La Bóbba car park leads to Le Colonne. A resource presented by Sentieri Carloforte introduces 25 nature trails on the island of San Pietro. Depending on how you feel on the day, you can therefore choose between a short coastal walk, nature observation and a longer hike.
