Val Grande, trails and sweeping lake views
San Bernardino Verbano combines protected landscapes, a nature trail, and historic architecture. A large part of the area lies within Val Grande National Park. The “L'uomo-albero” nature trail leads from Ompio to the summit of Monte Faiè and offers exceptional views of Lago di Mergozzo and large parts of Lago Maggiore.

Hiking destinations with different levels of detail
The nature trail has nine information boards and 20 numbered observation markers. The Corte Buè da Ompio route passes through extensive beech forests and birch stands that are recolonizing abandoned pastures. The Selvaggio Verde via ferrata is 11 km long, has an elevation gain of 417 m, and connects In la Piana along the gorge of the Rio Val Grande with Ponte Velina. The 11 kilometres and 417 metres of elevation gain provide two specific figures for planning this tour. Churches, oratories and traces of older paths
The Chiesa Parrocchiale della Purificazione di Maria in Bieno dates from the 18th century and was built over an earlier Romanesque church. An inscription plaque from Roman times is set into its façade; the Romanesque bell tower is considered unique in the surrounding area from a typological perspective. The Santuario della Madonna del Patrocinio – also known as Santa Maria del Calcare – stands along the old mule track that led from Bieno and Santino to the alpine pastures of Ompio and was built at the beginning of the 18th century. In Rovegro, the Chiesa Parrocchiale di San Gaudenzio dates from the 16th or 17th century and was renovated and enlarged in the 19th century. The Chiesa Parrocchiale di Sant'Antonio Abate is the only three-aisled church in the area. The Oratorio di Sant'Antonio da Padova in Bieno is a rural oratory dating from the late 17th or early 18th century.
Mountain hamlets, mule tracks and village centres
The architectural heritage continues beyond the churches. Dry-stone walls support the mule tracks in the mountain hamlets of San Bernardino Verbano, while rural structures characterize the alpine pastures and historic village centres. In Rovegro, a house known as the “casa del castellano”, dating from 1553, has been preserved. Also there, a bridge known as the “ponte romano” crosses the San Bernardino stream along the mule track between Rovegro and Cossogno.
