Mergozzo combines Lago di Mergozzo with historic traces, unusual rock landscapes and trails suited to different day plans. When you choose a holiday apartment or holiday home in Mergozzo, you will find both an easy archaeological and nature trail and a challenging via ferrata, as well as museums, churches and the distinctive lakeside area of the Riva district.

Between the lakeshore and hiking trails
The municipal Itinerario 4 leads from Bracchio to the megalithic complex “Cà d’la Norma”. The easy archaeological and nature trail is 3 km long, takes 1 hour and 15 minutes, and includes 30 m of ascent and 30 m of descent. It is recommended for every season and therefore offers a clearly defined option for a shorter outing.
Considerably more challenging is the Montorfano Via Ferrata, classified as difficulty level D – difficult. Its very exposed sections require a good head for heights and via ferrata equipment. Access can begin at the Mergozzo lakeshore via the Sentiero A58; this trail leads to the via ferrata in about an hour. Day planning therefore offers both an easy trail and a difficult via ferrata route with different requirements.
Lago di Mergozzo and its townscape
Lago di Mergozzo has many beaches suitable for swimming. The lake’s water is considered among the clearest in Italy. Along the Mergozzo waterfront, the houses of the “Riva” district are arranged in an amphitheatrical layout. The lake, waterfront buildings and the different trails offer several possible focuses for a stay, without requiring the natural experience and the town visit to be treated separately.
A distinctive symbol of Mergozzo is its centuries-old elm tree. In the old village of Sasso, the buildings cluster around a building dating from the era of the medieval communes, known as the “Castello”. Both features are independent points of interest in the town and complement the impressions of the lake with older architectural and landscape connections.
Churches, chapels and granite
The Chiesa Parrocchiale della Beata Vergine Assunta was inaugurated in 1610 on the site of an existing Romanesque church documented in a record from 1133. The thirteen Cappelle della Via Crucis were built in 1821 and restored between 2002 and 2005. This restoration brought their original 18th-century colours back to light.
The regional history of stone is also present in Mergozzo. The Mu.Ma.G. Museo del Marmo Rosa e del Granito is located in Albo di Mergozzo, Via Francia 29. The Ecomuseo del Granito di Montorfano encompasses the entire area of Mergozzo and the surrounding areas, including the extraction areas for Candoglia marble, Montorfano white granite, Mergozzo green granite and Baveno pink granite.
The Museo Archeologico in Mergozzo, Via Roma 8, adds another specific cultural site. The Chiesa di San Graziano is also located in the Frazione Candoglia, on Via S. Graziano. The range therefore extends from archaeological topics and churches to the various marbles and granites associated with Mergozzo and the surrounding areas.
