The village combines impressive landscapes with traces of regional history and trails that bring nature, chapels, alpine pastures and technical heritage sites together in a way that makes them visible. Holiday apartment in Cossogno: Nature at Val Grande
The village is home to Acquamondo, the environmental education centre of Val Grande National Park and, at the same time, a water museum. The Centro Visita di Cicogna offers another natural, historical and cultural perspective with its free exhibition about Val Grande. Parco di Inoca is a starting point for hiking trails into Val Grande. Thus, experiencing nature and gaining knowledge stand side by side as different facets of the same region.
Trails for different kinds of holiday days
The Sentiero della religiosità is a circular trail around Cossogno and passes rural chapels, devotional frescoes and the Oratorio di Inoca. The Sentiero della foresta connects Cossogno and Rovegro via the Ponte Romano above the Torrente S. Bernardino. The Sentiero dell'energia leads to the first Italian hydroelectric plant with long-distance transmission of alternating current.
Other trails focus on different aspects: The Sentiero della fatica leads via Corte di Rugno, an old alpine pasture of Cossogno, and reaches Conca d'Aurelio with its numerous rock carvings. The Sentiero del castagno follows a mule track through old chestnut forests to the impressive Corte di Miunchio. The La civiltà della fatica trail begins in Cicogna and leads to Alpe Prà and to Leciuri in Cossogno.
The Una storia d'acqua route provides a clearly defined duration: it takes approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes, excluding breaks and the return journey. The route leads through Val Pogallo with impressive waterfalls, stretches of water reflecting the green of the forests, and small flowers on grey rock walls. The different trail themes and the stated duration help you distinguish mentally between active and shorter activities during your holiday.
Forest, water and wide views
Besides its trails, Cossogno also reveals itself in varied ways. The Orrido “Paradiso dei cani” is a deep gorge carved out by thousands of years of flowing water at one of the narrowest points in the valley. The Pineta d'Inoca is a spruce forest with Norway spruces; larches and Weymouth pines also grow in the surrounding area. The area is equipped with picnic tables.
Runchio is an alpine pasture whose existence has been documented since as early as 1300. From Runchio, the Cossogno–Runchio–Alpe Aurelio trail offers wide views across Lago Maggiore towards the Lombard shore. The landscape therefore ranges from narrow, water-shaped valley forms to an open view of the lake.
Historical traces and living tradition
The Ponte Romano is a stone single-arch bridge above the Torrente San Bernardino, on the border between Cossogno and Rovegro. A stone set into the bridge gives 1773 as the year of construction. The Chiesa di San Brizio is dedicated to Saint Martin of Tours; this dedication originated in the mid-12th century.
At the Oratorio di Inoca, a trail passes the chapels of the Stations of the Cross. The oratory was built in the first half of the 17th century on an older chapel dedicated to the Madonna di Re. In the Ramolino Valley is El mulin det Camil, a historic combination of a walnut-oil press and mill, regarded as a symbol of the industriousness of the mountain population and the hardships of everyday life for past generations. The hydroelectric plant at the Lanca in Cossogno was built in 1892 for the long-distance transmission and distribution of electrical energy.
The Festa del Toc is part of the local tradition. Every year in Cossogno, on 26 December, the feast day of Saint Stephen, it is renewed through the distribution of blessed bread. The Festa del Toc has been documented since 1328 in a parchment charter; however, the distribution of bread alms is said to date back to as early as the 13th century.
