Mineral water with a history of its own in Bognanco
The springs of Bognanco rise from the rock and are naturally carbonated. The S. Lorenzo spring produces an alkaline-earthy mineral water containing bicarbonate and sulphate. From 1928 onwards, Bognanco mineral water was bottled as the first water in Italy using a fully automated process. According to tradition, the mineral waters of Bognanco were discovered in 1863 after a local shepherdess noticed the “burning” taste of the spring water she had drunk.
Hiking trails extending beyond Bognanco to Gondo and Brig
For hiking enthusiasts, the Bognanco Fonti–San Lorenzo trekking route starts in Bognanco Fonti and leads to San Lorenzo. The Via del Monscera connects the Sacro Monte Calvario in Domodossola with Gondo via Bognanco and the Passo di Monscera, where it joins the Stockalper Trail, which leads to Brig via the Simplon Pass.
The fourth stage of the Via Stockalper also passes through Val Bognanco. In Bognanco Fonti, it includes the thermal centre and the Dagliano gorges. A historical addition is the circular pedestrian route in Bognanco Fonti: it was begun in autumn 1929 and was formerly generally known as the Passeggiata dei Limoni.
Mountain-bike crossing and Cascata La Valletta in Bognanco Fonti
By mountain bike, the crossing of the Passo del Monscera descends via Graniga, San Lorenzo and Bognanco Fonti to Domodossola. Cascata La Valletta is located in the village of Bognanco Fonti and can be reached within a few minutes on foot. The waterfall consists of two distinct drops and adds a specific natural landmark to your route planning.
Travel to Bognanco via Domodossola by train and scheduled bus
Bognanco can be reached via Domodossola’s international FS railway station. It is served by connections from Bern and Milan; a scheduled bus runs to Bognanco from the bus station. This allows you to factor travel into your holiday-apartment planning if you want to reach the village by train and scheduled bus.
Choose the right holiday apartment for your daily rhythm
When choosing a holiday apartment in Bognanco, you can make your preferred daily rhythm the starting point. A nature- and activity-oriented plan puts trails and the accessible waterfall at the centre, while mineral water and local history add different accents. For families with varied interests, this makes it possible to weigh active days against culturally focused ones without limiting the stay to just one type of travel experience.
