Holiday apartment in Armeno amid culture and local history
The parish church of Santa Maria Assunta is located at the entrance to Armeno on Viale Cadorna, next to a car park. It dates back to the 12th century and was built over the remains of an ancient Roman temple. Inside, the area up to the altar is Romanesque in design and divided into three naves; medieval capitals bear carved depictions of animals. The church also houses Fermo Stella da Caravaggio’s painting “Deposizione della Croce” from 1548.
In Sovazza, a district of Armeno situated on a ridge above the valley of the Agogna River, the Chiesa di Santa Cecilia was founded in 1602. The Museo degli Alberghieri displays work tools, photographs, written records, menus, rare cookbooks and old newspapers. It also documents how, over the past four centuries, thousands of people left this area of Cusiana to work in kitchens, hotels and restaurants around the world.
Walking trails and views around Armeno
For walks, Gli anelli di Armeno offers a network of seven circular walking routes. The Anello Prati circular route leads from the town centre through the meadows along the Agogna stream, past the “Bontà” and the fitness trail. It is 4.3 kilometres long, has an elevation gain of 70 metres and a stated duration of 1 hour and 30 minutes. The different details help you distinguish between shorter and longer outings when planning your day.
The Anello Falò circular route adds a short detour to Monte Falò, offering a 360-degree panoramic view. A sweeping panoramic view opens up from the church square in Coiromonte. An easy path leads through the pretty village of Chéggino, offers panoramic views of Lake Orta and descends to Bàssola by the church. Alongside local culture, the focus is therefore also on scenic trails and a variety of landscape impressions.
Santuario di Luciago and religious heritage
The Santuario di Luciago, dedicated to the birth of the Virgin Mary, is part of the cultural and religious experience. It became a local destination for religious worship; numerous votive offerings hang on the walls of its naves. The old chapel contained a fresco from 1520 depicting Christ crucified with Our Lady of Sorrows and Saint John the Evangelist. A solemn procession was held on 8 September. It was subsequently decided to build a small church near Mazzarone and renovate the existing old chapel halfway between Armeno and Mottarone.
