Celle Enomondo between Fortress History and Hemp Tradition

In Celle Enomondo, fortress history, rural religious buildings and hemp tradition meet trails such as “Bric & bike” and Stage 2 of the Via dei Santi.

Fortress History and Religious Sites

The Ex Castello di Celle Enomondo stands on the site of an old fortress mentioned in documents in 1041 as Castellum de Cellis. The parish church now stands on the former site of the Ex Castello di Celle Enomondo.

The Chiesa della Confraternita di San Rocco dates from the 18th century and is designed in the Baroque style. The church contains a wooden statue of Saint Roch from the 18th century. The Confraternita di San Rocco was established in the 17th century following a plague epidemic and was intended to protect the countryside from hail and severe storms.

Chapels in the Rural Municipal Area

The rural municipal area of Celle Enomondo contains 18 small chapels built between the 18th and 19th centuries. The Cappella dell'Immacolata Concezione stands beside the road. The hamlet of Borgata Merlazza is also home to the single-nave Chiesa di San Vincenzo Ferreri, dating from the 19th century and dedicated to San Vincenzo Ferrari.

Celle Enomondo’s Hemp Tradition: Craftsmanship and Cuisine

Celle Enomondo’s local history includes a tradition of hemp cultivation. Hemp has been grown in Celle Enomondo since the early years of the 19th century. Its fibres were traditionally used to make, among other things, ropes, sacks, bed sheets, towels, tablecloths and clothing. Hemp seeds were used to make flour for bread and focaccia.

On Foot or by Bike: Two Trails through Celle Enomondo

The 18-kilometre “Bric & bike” trail can be explored on foot, by mountain bike or by e-bike. Along the route, visitors can discover restored votive pillars and chapels. For planning the day, the combination of 18 kilometres and the chosen means of transport provides a specific framework. Travelling on foot, by mountain bike or by e-bike changes the practical way the same route is divided.

Stage 2 of the Via dei Santi also passes through Celle Enomondo. It begins on Provincial Road 13A, reaches Celle Enomondo and then continues along Provincial Road 13 to the hamlet of Pianetti. The stage also connects Celle Enomondo with San Pancrazio and San Carlo di Tigliole. The stage associated with Celle Enomondo is regarded as a link between nature and history and leads to or through wildlife oases, old villages and Romanesque churches.

August among Festivals, History and Traditions

The Festa di San Rocco took place from 12 August to 16 August 2023 and from 14 August to 18 August 2024. The Festa della Canapa is associated with the month of August.
