Sant'Angelo Limosano: History and Pilgrimage Route

Historic Centre with Lanes and Steps

The medieval historic centre is characterised by lanes connected by steps that follow the slope of the hill. In the upper part, the houses still retain their external stonework. Corso Alessio Marone runs below the Rampa Vittorio Emanuele III and serves as the main access route to the historic centre. The ramp itself was built between 1906 and 1912 to connect the historic centre with the Bifernina junction of Provincial Road 73. The steps therefore shape the town's structure; when walking through the centre, the hillside location remains immediately apparent and determines the route.

Churches and Sacred Sites

Among the prominent buildings is Santa Maria Assunta in Cielo, a single-nave church from the 12th century with a wooden roof structure. The ancient church of San Pier Celestino is considered a place to visit in Sant'Angelo Limosano. San Rocco is considerably smaller in scale: the building is a single-nave sacred structure dating from the end of the 18th century.

Local Traditions at the Museo di Comunità

The Museo di Comunità displays objects from transhumance, rural life and traditional occupations. It also includes a room with video storytelling, where local residents recount facts, anecdotes and local traditions. On 16 August, a Museo di Comunità was opened in Sant'Angelo Limosano within the Parco delle Morge.

Madonna delle Stelle and Fonte di San Pietro

The Madonna delle Stelle sanctuary is located in the Fonte del Bove district. It was built two kilometres west of the town after a small statue of the Madonna was found on 3 January 1926. The Fonte di San Pietro is also closely connected with religious tradition: after winter, water begins to bubble there again a few days before the feast of San Pietro Celestino on 19 May. The Fonte di San Pietro is a venerated site, especially during the feast of San Pietro Celestino on 19 May.

Cammino del Perdono through Molise

The Cammino del Perdono connects L'Aquila in Abruzzo with Monte Sant'Angelo in Apulia and includes a 105-kilometre section through Molise. The route reaches Sant'Angelo Limosano after passing by the Santa Maria delle Stelle sanctuary, then descends via an impressive limestone staircase to the square. The Cammino del Perdono can be walked year-round and includes stages with difficulty levels suitable for hiking and tourism. When planning a day's walk, the 105 kilometres can be organised according to the designated stages; the difficulty level describes the sections of the route.
