Moresco combines a striking historic center with an open hilly landscape and culinary traditions. The Castello di Moresco stands on the crest of a hill and overlooks the Aso Valley below. The complex is completely surrounded by walls, has a triangular layout and is crowned at one point by the imposing 12th-century Torre Eptagonale.

The Castello di Moresco was first mentioned in an official document in 1083. Together with the Torre dell’Orologio, the Torre Eptagonale formed the defensive system of the Castello di Moresco. The Torre Eptagonale is 25 m high and crowned by an impressive Ghibelline battlement. The Torre dell’Orologio, also known as the Torre Minore, is an ancient defensive structure on the southern side of the historic center. Its square layout and a small entrance gate face the interior of a hypothetical palisade enclosure.

The Porta Castellana is the usual entrance for visitors to Moresco. Through its brick arch, a staircase covered by a vault leads to the picturesque piazzetta of the village.

Churches, towers and art in the historic center

The Chiesa di Santa Maria dell’Olmo was built in the 16th century to house a Gothic aedicule, which is still located inside it today. The church also preserves a fresco by Vincenzo Pagani, created around 1540. It depicts Christ on the cross between the Virgin Mary and Saints Mary Magdalene, John and Peter. Immediately outside the historic center lies the Santuario della Madonna della Salute. The sacred building has an octagonal layout and a dome clad in diamond-pointed ashlar blocks, with echoes of an oriental style.

The Pinacoteca “Patrizio Gennari” on the first floor of the Palazzo Comunale offers further insights into regional art. It preserves works of art from the region and also displays a monumental panel by Vincenzo Pagani from 1529. The former Chiesa di Santa Sofia was revived in 2005 as a small theater with around 60 seats.

Valdaso, paths and regional specialties

The Chiesa di San Lorenzo stands in a scenic setting with views extending to the Adriatic coast. The Valdaso di Moresco is a rural landscape of gentle hills, vineyards, centuries-old olive groves and rows of fruit trees descending toward the Adriatic Sea.

The “Arte, fede e tradizioni” walking route takes visitors from the historic center of Moresco to places of faith. The paths through the landscape also connect the village with the surrounding countryside and with historic churches and sanctuaries.

Culinary experiences include tastings of oil, wine and typical products. Visitors can also tour gardens and orchards and gain an up-close insight into farming traditions. One local specialty is Pizza Ficata, which combines crispy dough with the sweetness of figs. The traditional Sagra della Polenta con le Vongole takes place on August 9 and 11 within the old walls of the village of Moresco, combining polenta with clams, live music and performances. At the end of October, the Festa del Braciere follows in Piazza del Castello, featuring grilled meat, chestnuts and local wine, along with folk music and dances.
