Montefalcone Appennino: Rocky Ridge, Museums and Nature

The historic centre of Montefalcone Appennino lies 758 metres above sea level, on a rocky ridge and high limestone cliffs. From here, panoramic views open out across the Aso Valley.

Limestone, forests and special plants

The CEA Montefalcone lies at the heart of the SIC “Montefalcone Appennino-Smerillo” and the protected floristic area “Bosco di Smerillo e Montefalcone”. On the cool limestone slopes of Montefalcone, wild orchids bloom from late April to early summer, including Orchis mascula, Ophrys apifera and Anacamptis morio. Ancient beech trees also grow in the area around Montefalcone Appennino. A monumental beech tree can be reached via a short walk.

Museums and historic buildings

Palazzo Felici is a 17th-century building that houses the Alamanno Museum. The museum contains a monumental polyptych by Pietro Alamanno, painted between 1475 and 1480. The Municipal Museum of Fossils and Minerals has more than 1,200 minerals and displays local finds from the Lower Pliocene, as well as fossils from around the world.

The religious and military past is also evident in several buildings. The Convento di San Giovanni in Selva dates back to the 9th century and was established as a foundation of Farfa Abbey. The monastery was renovated in the 18th century; the complex includes a cloister with a central fountain and a church dedicated to Saint John the Baptist, with a wooden choir dating from 1805. The castle has a six-storey keep and a panoramic terrace, which served defensive and observation functions. The Church of San Pietro in Penne has well-kept gardens, as well as a balcony overlooking the cliff.

Routes for hiking, pilgrimage and e-biking

The official religious route “Tra cielo e silenzio: passi di fede nell’antico bosco” begins at the historic churches of Montefalcone and leads through places of devotion to the Convento di San Giovanni in Selva. Stage 15 of the Cammino dei Cappuccini runs between Montefalcone Appennino and Rotella. It is approximately 20 kilometres long and passes through mountain and hill landscapes, along gravel roads, nature trails and some paved sections.

The official e-bike route begins in the historic centre and follows gravel paths and scenic stretches. The fossil route begins at Monte Falcone and runs along the rocky ridge through fossil-bearing strata, natural cavities and terraced gardens. It continues along paths where wooded sections alternate with bright viewpoints.

Seasonal impressions and museum activities

Sapori d’Autunno takes place every year during the first days of October. The museum in Montefalcone offers educational activities in the museum, in the local fossil areas and along the nature trails of Bosco del Monte Falcone.
