San Benedetto del Tronto has wide sandy beaches framed by palm trees and oleanders. In the southern section, the promenade was redesigned as a natural-looking urban park with ten themed gardens. For active days, the cycle path from San Benedetto del Tronto is ideal. The flat route is around 15 kilometres long and connects the marina of San Benedetto del Tronto with the nearby town of Cupra Marittima. Rest areas, drinking-water fountains and direct access to the beaches are among the route’s features. During the summer season, the South Pier is also a starting point for several boat trips along the coast. Art, harbour and history
The Museo d’Arte sul Mare (MAM), an open-air museum, is located on the South Pier. It comprises 200 sculptures on the surfaces of the wave-breaker blocks arranged along the promenade, as well as more than 30 murals on the concrete blocks in its third section. The harbour also provides the setting for the Museo del Mare: the museum complex is located at the wholesale fish market on the North Pier of the harbour and at other locations in the town.
At the Antiquarium Truentinum of the Museo del Mare, you can see worked flint objects and ceramic fragments from the Neolithic period. The Museo Ittico “Augusto Capriotti” presents thematically arranged marine specimens, including sponges, starfish, various types of crustaceans, a tiger shark and a megalodon. The Museo d’Arte Sacra is located next to the Cathedral of Santa Maria della Marina.
Another historical landmark is the Torre dei Gualtieri. The residents of San Benedetto del Tronto call it “il Torrione”. It was an important command post from the 12th or 13th century and houses exhibitions as well as cultural initiatives. The Palazzina Azzurra complements the cultural offering with exhibitions, conferences and various cultural events.
Nature observation and regional cuisine
The Riserva Naturale Sentina is a protected area in San Benedetto del Tronto with great ecological and landscape significance. Sentina is also an important resting place for numerous migratory bird species and provides opportunities to observe rare and protected birds. It therefore creates a distinctly natural counterpoint to the beaches, promenade and harbour.
The local identity also includes brodetto alla sambenedettese. This traditional maritime dish originated from fishermen preparing their unsold catch on board their boats. A traditional homemade version uses white wine vinegar, paprika and green tomatoes.
