Culture between the historic centre, clock tower and Mail Art
The historic centre of Montecarotto preserves parts of the fortification wall, cobbled lanes, aristocratic palaces and small squares. The cultural character ranges from cobbled lanes and small squares to Mail Art and Italian-style theatre architecture. One detail of the town's history is the clock in the Torrione dell'Orologio: It was designed and built by Pietro Mei in 1849 and is still wound by hand every day. At the level of the battlement walkway, the Torrione is connected to another tower by a covered passage.
The Museo Comunale e della Mail Art is the only public museum in Italy dedicated to Mail Art. The Teatro Comunale adds another architectural facet: The theatre was built in the Italian style in the mid-19th century and has 150 seats, stucco, frescoes and velvet decorations.
Panoramas and excursions into the countryside
After its restoration, the Torrione dell'Orologio was opened to visitors in 2011. From the top, it offers a 360-degree panorama over the surrounding area, the Apennines, the rooftops of Montecarotto's historic centre, the Adriatic and Conero, as well as the Misa and Esino valleys.
The Parco del Trabocco is ideal for an excursion into nature. The nature reserve is rich in flora and fauna and lies at the foot of Montecarotto hill; the Fossato stream flows through the park. Those who prefer a short trail can choose the Sentiero Mulino. It leads from a car park along an easy road to the Vecchio Mulino. The Giro Cascata, by contrast, is designed as a circular route: After crossing a bridge, you reach the level of the waterfall a few metres later.
Places and landscapes in the surrounding area
Several cultural sites with different characteristics are located around Montecarotto: the Pianetti Palace, a palace, the Eremo dei Frati Bianchi, a monastery, the Colocci Palace, a palace, and the Museo "a. Colocci", a museum. The surrounding area also includes scenic destinations: Monte Murano is a mountain, Colle Ameno is a peak and Monte San Pietro is also a peak. The wider regional area around Montecarotto also includes the Frasassi Caves, a cave.
