Monsano: Castle, Churches and Esino Cycling Tour

Monsano combines medieval architecture, sacred art and an MTB cycling tour along the Esino.

The historic centre of Monsano is characterised by a medieval castle and a 15th-century ring of fortifications, whose layout is perfectly rectangular. Its clear geometric form gives the historic complex a particularly distinctive profile. At the same time, the town’s history reflects several layers of time, ranging from the medieval fortifications to later churches and villas.

Castle and Historic Buildings

The historic castle itself has a rectangular layout measuring approximately 200 × 90 metres, with corner towers, a drawbridge and a partially preserved moat. In 1197, Monsano was first mentioned as a dependency of Valfucina Abbey near San Vicino.

The Church of the Most Holy Sacrament was built in the 16th century and completely rebuilt in 1701. Its former name was Santa Maria del Soccorso. The original core of the Church of San Pietro Apostolo dates back to the 12th century. San Pietro Apostolo also houses an altarpiece by Claudio Ridolfi from the 17th century. It depicts the Madonna and Child, along with Saints Francis and Stephen.

In the hamlet of Sant’Ubaldo stands the 18th-century Villa Pianetti with its park. In 1472, Andrea di Bartolo was commissioned to paint a fresco of the Virgin Mary based on the description provided by the witnesses to the apparition. The villa, park and fresco extend the picture of Monsano beyond the castle complex itself, adding further evidence of the town’s history and art history.

Festivals and Music in August

The Festa dell'Assunta offers food stalls from 13 to 15 August. From 13 to 15 August, it also includes games and an exhibition in the rooms adjoining the sanctuary. The festival thus combines culinary offerings with additional events and an exhibition at a clearly designated location.

The Monsano Folk Festival also takes place in August. It is an international festival held at changing locations, featuring traditional folk music as well as folk revivals. The changing venues distinguish this festival from one single fixed setting; musically, it combines traditional folk music with later revivals of folk.

Cycling along the Esino

The “Monsano by MTB” cycling tour begins at Monsano Castello, follows the cycle path along the Esino and reaches Jesi. For much of its length, the route runs along the Esino River and through the landscapes of the Vallesina floodplain. It therefore connects the starting point at Monsano Castello with a river and floodplain landscape and the destination of Jesi. It also offers the opportunity to visit the Ripa Bianca WWF oasis. The tour thus highlights another side of Monsano alongside its castle, churches and festivals: a route centred on the Esino and the landscape of Vallesina.
