Holiday apartment in Varano Borghi: Discover the area’s cultural history

The Cimitero di Varano Borghi was opened for burials in 1911 and designed by the architect Paolo Cesa Bianchi on behalf of the Borghi family. It is also one of the stops on the Museo Diffuso di Varano Borghi. The Chiesa del Divino Redentore was built at the beginning of the 20th century as part of the urban redevelopment promoted by the Borghi family and was designed by the engineer Paolo Cessa Bianchi. The drawings for the Chiesa reproduce the ground plan and elevations of the Collegiata di Castiglione Olona from 1422 to 1425 almost exactly.

The Villa Borghi is also part of the historic setting. This elegant estate, built in the second half of the 19th century, features eclectic-Baroque forms and was constructed on the site of an existing building. Varano Borghi is also characterised by 19th-century industrial architecture. The origins of the Cotonificio e Villaggio Operaio di Varano Borghi date back to 1819, when Pasquale Borghi, head of the family, bought an old mill on the Torrente Brabbia and a large part of the municipal territory in order to establish a cotton company.

Lakeside and local history in Varano Borghi

The lakeside area of Lake Comabbio in Varano Borghi is protected as a landscape. In the Boffalora district of Varano Borghi, the church of San Giuseppe is located near the shore of Lake Comabbio; it is used for weekly Masses. This combines a focus on the lake with another sacred site within the municipal area.

Paths and nature observation

A range of options is available for active days and days focused on nature. The cycling and walking path connecting the lakes passes through Varano Borghi. In the Palude Brabbia nature reserve, there are nature trails, observation huts, an educational pond and a boat that takes visitors to a floating observation hut. When planning your stay, you can therefore weigh up walking or cycling along a path against observing nature in a protected area.

Plan your holiday apartment around your interests

If you are planning a holiday apartment stay in Varano Borghi, one simple question can help: Should your stay focus mainly on the sacred buildings, the Cimitero, Villa Borghi and the industrial history, or are Lake Comabbio, the cycling and walking path and Palude Brabbia among your main interests? This distinction is helpful for families with different interests, as cultural discoveries and nature-focused days can be given different priorities.
