Fortress and local history
Rocca di Orino is an ancient fortress northeast of the municipality of Orino, at 537 m above sea level, on a rocky promontory overlooking large parts of Valcuvia. The first documentary records about it date from March 1176. The first official document in which Orino is mentioned is a donation made by the Lombard King Liutprand in 712 to the monastery of San Pietro in Ciel d’Oro in Pavia.
The Rocca has a rectangular surrounding wall with battlements, two towers and an inner fortress called “Rocchetta”. The Chiesa di San Lorenzo was founded in the 14th century, rebuilt in the first half of the 17th century and still has a Romanesque bell tower.
