Holiday apartment in Luino: Lakeside, culture and trails on Lake Maggiore
Accommodation in Luino
Luino combines Lake Maggiore with lakeside paths, churches and routes through forests and valleys. Parco a Lago is a public green garden on the shore of Lake Maggiore; a continuous pedestrian promenade connects various areas of the lakeside zone there. The park includes a children's play area with shock-absorbing flooring. Luino's lakeside promenade is freely accessible and barrier-free. When choosing a holiday apartment in Luino, you can therefore first decide whether you want to focus on lakeside paths, culture or outdoor activities.
Churches, archives and living history
The Chiesa e convento del Carmine were founded in 1477 on the lakeshore by the lay Carmelite Jacopo da Luino. Its carved portal made of red sandstone creates a distinctive architectural accent. The statue of Madonna del Carmine is carried through Luino in a procession every year in July. In the Chiesa di San Pietro, the oldest church in Luino, the Romanesque bell tower is dated to 1050–1075. It also contains a 16th-century fresco cycle featuring an Adoration of the Magi and two saints speaking to each other.
After its restoration in 2019, Palazzo Verbania serves as a repository for the archives of Vittorio Sereni and Piero Chiara belonging to the municipality of Luino. At the Luino market, outside Palazzo Verbania, there is a dedicated area with stalls selling products from small local producers. Construction work on the Oratorio dei ss. Giuseppe e Dionigi was completed in 1666. The tall pronaos was a symbol of the town for a long time.
Lakeside paths and hiking trails
The Sentiero Belvedere begins on Via Cavallotti opposite Porto Vecchio, dominated by Luino's landmark, the Madonnina, and leads into the old quarter. Its route passes through the forest to the village of Gaggio and then descends through the Colmegnino valley to Colmegna. The Luino section of the Sentiero Italia CAI leads from the landing stage through the old town and the Carnella area to Colmegna, and then continues through the forest by the lake to Maccagno. This makes it possible to consider short paths by the water and longer hikes as different ideas for a day out, without combining them into a single route.
Cycling on roads, off-road and over changes in elevation
The forests and valleys around Luino offer mountain-bike routes with varying levels of difficulty. The area is also suitable for road and off-road cycling; because of the many changes in elevation, less well-trained cyclists are advised to use an e-bike. When choosing a holiday apartment in Luino, you can align the focus of your stay with your planned activities and weigh up the lakeside promenade, culture, hiking and cycling.
