Between Sasso del Ferro and Lake Maggiore
Sasso del Ferro reaches an altitude of 1,062 metres and is considered a panoramic balcony overlooking the landscape around Laveno. The cable car to Sasso del Ferro departs from the centre of Laveno and reaches a point near the summit after approximately 15 minutes. Poggio Sant’Elsa, the cable car’s arrival point, offers views of the Verbano, the Alps, the Pre-Alps and their lakes.

The tradition of hang gliding in Laveno began around the mid-1970s; flights launch from Sasso del Ferro and Monte Nudo. It includes tandem flights for tourists, in which inexperienced passengers are accompanied by a flight instructor. Laveno’s restored historic centre is connected to the lakeside promenade by a tourist circular route with 15 stops marked by information panels. For an active route, the approximately 5-kilometre cycle path between Laveno and Cittiglio runs along the Boesio.

Piazza Fontana is the heart of Laveno’s historic centre. A war memorial designed by the architect Piero Portaluppi in 1923 stands in Parco delle Rimembranze. Santa Maria in Ca’ Deserta is Laveno’s oldest place of worship and was first mentioned in 1081, when the church was donated to the Abbey of Saint Peter of Cluny. Villa De Angeli Frua is located on the main square of Laveno’s historic centre; its west façade offers views of Lake Maggiore, the Verbano and the Alps.
Ceramics, boats and modern architecture
In the Cerro district, the Museo Internazionale Design Ceramico (MIDeC) is housed in a 16th-century palace; it documents the region’s ceramic history. The Fondazione Officine dell’Acqua in Laveno-Mombello was created through a project for the urban regeneration of the former warehouses of the harbour and railway station. It displays a significant collection of historic boats, as well as volumes, images and first-hand accounts relating to the Verbano’s craft tradition. Villa Fumagalli Frascoli in Laveno-Mombello expresses the architect Piero Portaluppi’s personal modernist style. Admission to the Labirinto delle Camelie is free.
Crossing the lake and a longer stage
The Laveno–Intra–Laveno ferry service operates approximately every 20 to 30 minutes; the crossing takes 20 minutes. The Cammino del Lago Maggiore includes a 24-kilometre stage from Laveno to Luino with 1,450 metres of elevation gain.
