The trails around Comerio can be explored on foot or by mountain bike. The network comprises 18 trails, allowing visitors to explore the most interesting areas of the Campo dei Fiori Nature Park. Trail 12 from Comerio runs through the Valle della Tacca and then reaches the Campo dei Fiori nature reserve. It also leads to the military road to Forte di Orino. At around 721 metres, a turnoff from Trail 12 leads to the Grotta del Remeron within a few minutes. At 930 metres, Trail 12 from Comerio reaches the Grotta della Scondurava, a natural cave of karstic origin.

The Forte di Orino, a fortified military site belonging to the Cadorna Line, is located near Comerio. From there, views extend over the Pre-Alps, the Piedmontese and Central Alps, the Verbano, the western Po Valley and the Varese Lakes. This makes the area around Comerio a varied destination for both hikes and landscape viewing.

Plant Life and Special Experiences

The Serra tropicale del Comune di Comerio was built in the first half of the 19th century by the Tatti Tallachini family as a plant propagation greenhouse. It served as a complement to the collection greenhouse of the villa of the same name. It is home to almost 500 rare, unusual and tropical plant species that are not commonly found in Italy.

Every year in June, Utopia Tropicale organises ComeRaro, an exhibition and plant market for rare, unusual and tropical plants in Comerio. ComeRaro includes workshops, talks and guided tours of the Serra tropicale del Comune di Comerio. This creates a clear seasonal occasion for anyone wishing to combine botanical highlights with shared discovery.

Villas, Sacred Architecture and Local History

Villa Tatti Tallachini in Comerio was built in the first half of the 18th century at the instigation of the lawyer Benedetto Tatti. At the end of the 19th century, the estate passed to the Tallachini family. They added a large spinning mill building to the 18th-century structure on its eastern side and used the small pavilion as a special venue for chamber concerts. The garden is arranged with flights of steps featuring fountains, statues, niches and water lilies.

The Chiesa di San Celso in Comerio dates back to the 11th century and is the surviving part of an abbey of the same name, which was abandoned by the monks around the middle of the 16th century. The church retains its Romanesque form, with a rectangular single-nave interior, a semicircular apse and exposed masonry. Inside, there is a 16th-century fresco depicting the Crucifixion with Saints Celso and Benedetto.

The more recent local history is also visible: La Stele is a bronze and steel monument created in Comerio after Largo Ossola was redesigned in 2001. Sericulture provides another historical reference. In the 19th century, almost every family in Comerio raised silkworms and subsequently supplied them to local businesses in the surrounding area.

For your choice of location, you can therefore compare different priorities: Trail 12, the caves and Forte di Orino represent active days in the countryside; the Serra, ComeRaro, Villa Tatti Tallachini and San Celso provide cultural and botanical highlights.
