Churches and chapels with a history of their own
The Chiesa della Beata Vergine Assunta e S. Ilario was built from 1621 onwards. By 1644, construction was already largely complete, although the walls were still rough, the floor was missing, and the bell tower only reached as high as the roof. The single-nave church has six 17th-century side chapels, in a style considered plain Baroque. Its historic sculptural works of art include the high altar, the San Tito altar, the Madonna altar, the confessional, and the choir gallery.
The Chiesa di Sant’Ilario has origins dating back to before the 15th century. Following a pastoral visit by San Carlo Borromeo, it was renovated in 1570. Its medieval-style façade is clad in red brick; a rose window contains a floral-patterned glass window.
The Festa decennale di S. Tito is also part of the religious life of Casorate Sempione. To this day, it remains a lively religious devotion and popular tradition, and it was first celebrated in 1926. The Chiesa dello Spirito Santo dates from the 18th century, was built as a private chapel, and is no longer in use today.
The Cappella S. Rocco was built before 1570 outside the town in an agricultural setting that was surrounded by fields at the time. Farmers stopped there to pray for personal concerns or a good harvest.
Between the historic centre and the natural landscape
After passing through the historic centre, the circular route through Casorate Sempione leads through the natural landscape of Parco del Ticino and then returns to the municipality. In this way, it combines local history with a section through open countryside. This gives you a varied opportunity to experience the cultural and natural character of the area as part of a single outing.
The Casorate-ERSAF trail runs mainly through the territory of Casorate Sempione and can be travelled on foot or by mountain bike without any particular difficulties. It passes through forests with Scots pine, English oak, maple, and black locust, as well as shrubs such as elder, hawthorn, and hazel.
The trail can be accessed in Casorate Sempione via Via Cacciatori at the recycling centre and via Via Isonzo. A third access point is located in Somma Lombardo on Via Molino Secco.
