Bregano: Santa Maria Assunta among forests and lakes
Accommodation in Bregano
Bregano lies on a hill that is now surrounded by oak and chestnut forests. From the hill, there are views over the lakes of Biandronno and Monate, the Varese Pre-Alps and the peaks of Campo dei Fiori.
Santa Maria Assunta and the historic town centre
Santa Maria Assunta stands in the highest part of the built-up area. The road ascending to Bregano ends at the site where the church stands. A Stations of the Cross leads to the Santa Maria Assunta sanctuary; its final station is the church. The church building itself is also worth a closer look: Santa Maria Assunta has a Latin cross floor plan with a single-nave layout, a square presbytery and a semicircular apse. The sequence from the nave through the presbytery to the apse gives the interior a clear longitudinal orientation.
Above the altar is a wooden statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary. She wears a red dress and a blue mantle decorated with gold. The statue is already mentioned in records from 1748.
History and living tradition
Roman-period graves have been found on the hill of Bregano. Graves from the Lombard period suggest that the use of the hill as a burial site probably began around the 3rd century and continued until the 18th century. For those interested in culture, the Roman and Lombard grave finds on the hill are of particular interest.
August festivities in honour of the Madonna continue to be held in Bregano and are mainly attended by local residents.
Forests, lake views and the Sentiero dei Mulini
The Sentiero dei Mulini runs through Bregano; the signposted route section is 16.2 km long in total and has an average walking time of 4 hours. Together with the route length of 16.2 kilometres, the average walking time of four hours provides a timeframe in which personal breaks and one’s own pace can be accommodated during the day. When planning a day of hiking, the time available therefore remains a separate aspect of the day’s planning alongside the route itself. The Sentiero dei Mulini also forms a connection between Lake Varese and Lake Maggiore.
The Lavatoio di Via Piave is located outside Bregano town centre. The washhouse has a rectangular brick structure that is open on three sides. The basin is divided into two sections and fitted with sloping stone slabs. Within the townscape, the church and the Lavatoio occupy different spatial positions: Santa Maria Assunta in the highest built-up area and the Lavatoio outside the centre of Bregano. In the area of Bregano’s former castle, archaeological layers containing remains of earlier building and monumental phases may have been preserved.
