Angera for days of culture, lakeside and nature

Angera appeals to travellers who want to combine culture and nature in their daily plans. When choosing a holiday apartment in Angera, you can consider whether historical discoveries, days by the water or walks should be the main focus.

The Civico Museo Archeologico offers guided tours, exhibitions, conferences, as well as educational and general-interest activities. It is housed in the Palazzo del Pretorio, which dates back to the 15th century. Its prehistoric section preserves the oldest finds in the entire Varese area; they are around 15,000 years old.

Archaeology and history in the townscape

Rocca di Angera initially belonged to the Visconti family from the Verbano area. In 1449, it was acquired by the Borromeo family, which still owns it today. The Rocca includes carefully designed medieval gardens with symbolic significance. Their design is based on studies of codices, historical documents and illustrations in illuminated manuscripts. Also located in the Rocca, the Museo della Bambola e del Giocattolo presents the history of dolls and play through the development of materials, socio-educational behaviours, and connections with art, clothing and fashion from the past and present.

In the Chiesa Parrocchiale di Santa Maria Assunta, an antique baptismal font stands near the entrance in the left aisle. Mastro Antonio Merzagora from Angera created it in 1768. Another cultural destination is Andrea Kerbaker’s Kapannone dei Libri. It is located in a former industrial shed on the shore of Lake Maggiore and has 400 square metres of metal shelving.

Beaches, nature and trails

Spiaggia La Noce can initially be reached via a paved access route. A ramp then leads to the sandy area for wheelchair users and people with reduced mobility. Spiaggia La Nocciola is also accessible to dogs. In the Palude Bruschera, aquatic fauna, migratory birds, amphibians, reptiles and small mammals find a refuge.

Those who would like to combine a walk with a set circular route can consider the Anello di San Quirico. The circular trail lies at the foot of San Quirico hill in the municipalities of Angera and Ranco and is part of the VVL-N1 route. On foot, the circular route can be started from Angera via Via delle Vigne Secche and a panoramic variant. To travel from the Piedmontese shore of the lake, you can get off at Arona railway station and take a boat from the Navigazione Lago Maggiore landing stage.
