Holiday apartment in Oga: Forte Venini, nature and hiking trails

At an altitude of 1,500 m above sea level, Oga lies on a very sunny panoramic balcony overlooking Bormio and Valdidentro. Forte Venini and the Church of Oga

Forte Venini was equipped with four long-range guns, whose range was approximately 13 km. Comprehensive restoration returned Forte Venini in Oga to the public in 2003. In autumn 2014, it officially came under the protection and ownership of the municipality of Valdisotto.

The Church of Saints Lorenzo and Colombano in Oga became a parish church in 1632 and is dedicated to Saint Lawrence. The present church was built in 1904 in the Neo-Gothic style after a devastating fire destroyed the former medieval chapel. The church houses two valuable altarpieces dating from 1538.

For the feast of Saint Lawrence, the traditional “fiamme di S. Lorenzo”—large bonfires—are lit on the natural terrace of Tadè overlooking the village.

Forests, peaks and the Paluaccio bog

Oga lies amid extensive coniferous forests and is surrounded by the peaks of the Central Alps: Ortles, Gran Zebrù, Tresero, Thurwieser, Cevedale, S. Matteo, Confinale, Reit and Cima Piazzi.

The Paluaccio di Oga nature reserve covers an area of more than 30 hectares. The carnivorous plant Drosera rotundifolia grows there; the Paluaccio peat bog dates back approximately 13,000 years.

Hiking trails and choosing where to stay

The hike to the Cerdec Hut passes through dense forests and green pastures and by the Cerdec alpine huts; it is considered suitable for the whole family. The route begins at the car park of Forte di Oga, follows trail N280 towards Crap del Maro, passes through the centre of Oga and then continues along trail N207. The car park at Forte di Oga and trail numbers N280 and N207 provide specific reference points for planning this hike.

Near the hamlet of Le Motte di Oga, on Provincial Road No. 28 between Oga and Le Motte, easy woodland paths lead through the mountain landscape. The road to Oga branches off the SS 38 dello Stelvio at Santa Lucia, on the outskirts of Bormio, and leads onto Provincial Road No. 28; travellers arriving from the lower Valtellina turn left.
