Between Views and History

Lago della Piodella lies at the head of Val Pilotera, not far from the mountain pasture of the same name, at an altitude of over 2,000 metres, and is an exceptional viewpoint. Another prominent destination is Torre di Segname. It probably dates from the 9th or 10th century and was first mentioned in 1213 in a dispute between the Bishop of Como and the municipality of Chiavenna over rights to Torre di Gordona. The tower is the only one of the numerous signal towers in Valchiavenna that has remained practically intact since the 9th century.

Crotti, Mountain Pastures and Historic Trails

The crotti of Gordona are located along two almost parallel streets connected by stairways. Traditionally, they were used to store wine, cheese and other food. The Crotti di Bodengo lie at an altitude of 1,030 metres and are considered the highest crotti in Valchiavenna. The historic mule track of Gordona also tells the story of former routes used for daily life and work: it was built in the first decades of the 20th century so that residents could reach the mountain pastures with their families, loads and livestock.

In Cima, a round church dating from 1882 and a bell tower built later, in 1935, give the mountain settlement its distinctive character. The Chiesa di Santa Caterina can be reached via impressive Stations of the Cross dating from the 18th century. In the Chiesa di San Martino, the baptistery, three confessionals and the organ loft by Giovanni Albiolo of Bellagio are works from the 17th and 18th centuries.

Flavours and Festivals in Gordona

Füghiascia is Gordona’s typical dish and was originally prepared with flour, water, salt and cold polenta. The Festa della Füghiascia was introduced in Gordona in 1985 for the month of May; during the festival, the focaccia is kneaded, baked and served on site according to a codified and standardised recipe. The Festa di San Bernardo takes place on the penultimate weekend of August in the Crotti di Bodengo, beyond the bridge over the Boggia.

Tours for Varied Active Days

The Sentiero dei crotti between Cama in the Swiss canton of Graubünden and Gordona opened in 2005. Alpe Cima can be reached via an easy path from the Menarola side or via a steep ridge trail from Cermine. For the Donadivo–Cermine–Alpe Cima hike, Gordona can be reached from Chiavenna by STPS bus. Donadivo can be reached by car after arriving in Gordona, provided a permit has been purchased in advance.

Canyoning in Val Bodengo features emerald-green pools, natural slides and waterfalls that require ropes or special techniques. Canyoning is led by certified mountain guides trained in canyoning. The Val Bodengo 2 canyoning tour is a challenging route of medium difficulty, lasts 3.5 to 4 hours and requires prior experience. The Placche del Boggia are also known as Paradis di Can and are a climbing area in Val Bodengo. Cyclists can use the 4-kilometre Gordona–Donadivo cycling route, which has 470 metres of elevation gain; it can be ridden with a mountain bike or a regular bicycle.

Special Structures on the Boggia

Ponte Boggia was rebuilt in 1766. It formerly spanned a waterfall formed by the stream of the same name, was destroyed by a flood in 1983 and subsequently restored with a concrete deck. Pont secret is a bridge built using a special technique involving metal cables and wooden planks and is probably unique in Valchiavenna.
