Holiday apartment in Rovescala: Wine, History and Hilly Landscapes

Rovescala is situated in a hilly setting in the small valley of the Bardonezza stream. Its combination of landscape, wine and history is reflected in clearly identifiable places and events. The Primavera dei vini, also known as Festa del Bonarda, is celebrated in Rovescala every Sunday in March from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. During the Primavera dei Vini, the region’s wine cellars open their doors to visitors so that they can discover different expressions of the wine that shapes the area’s identity.

Hilly Setting and Wide-Ranging Views

Castello di Luzzano is situated at an elevation of 270 metres on the ridge separating the provinces of Piacenza and Pavia in the Oltrepò Pavese. Its position on the first foothills offers wide-ranging views over the valleys below and the Po Plain. At Castello, elevation, a border ridge and distant views come together in a tangible landscape – an appealing focal point for anyone wishing to combine nature and culture when choosing a holiday apartment in Rovescala.

Church and Lombard Traces

The Parrocchiale della Natività di Maria Vergine is an 18th-century single-nave church with three chapels on each side. The church also has exterior access stairways. In the hamlet of Luzzano, Lombard graves belonging to four men who lived in the 7th century were discovered in 1961. They had been buried with scramasaxes, swords, shields and spearheads. These two cultural and historical themes give Rovescala different perspectives through time, from 18th-century sacred architecture to traces of Lombard burials.

Archaeological Traces in Castello di Luzzano

Castello di Luzzano houses an archaeological museum in the old winery, with finds from the excavations of 1995 and 1996. The site thus combines the visible elevated position of the Castello with archaeological finds, adding another specific setting to Rovescala’s historical dimension.

Regional Cuisine and Wine

The former 18th-century customs house contains an inn and a restaurant serving regional specialities. At DiVinAgosto 2025, traditional dishes from the region such as „nos tond“, roast beef with Bonarda DOC, carne salada with Soncino and grilled Tomino were offered together with selected wines from the Oltrepò.

In Rovescala, DiVinAgosto celebrated the enogastronomic culture of the Oltrepò Pavese from 24 August to 31 August 2025. The specific dishes and wines offered on this occasion show how closely regional cuisine and wine events are connected, without implying that this constitutes a permanent programme of events.

Events and Getting There

On 23 August 2026, Rovescala hosted the traditional cycling race Colli Rovescalesi. Rovescala can be reached by car from the main centres of the Oltrepò Pavese and from nearby places in the Piacenza area, such as Borgonovo Valtidone and Castel San Giovanni.
