Holiday apartment in Romagnese: hiking trails, nature and village culture

Romagnese combines extensive trails, distinctive natural areas and a remarkable wealth of village culture. When choosing a holiday apartment in Romagnese, the experiences you are looking for can determine the right daily rhythm: active tours lead through forests and upland areas, while museums, churches and local traditions offer further discoveries.

Hiking, mountain biking and horse riding

Romagnese offers 80 km of trails at elevations between 500 and 1,300 metres. They can be explored on foot, by mountain bike or on horseback. The approximately 30-km-long Anello di Romagnese is a high-altitude trail that leads to the foothills of Monte Penice. This makes it possible to view short excursions and longer active days as different components of your travel plans.

The Sentiero delle Cascate del Rivarolo begins in the medieval village of Romagnese and follows the Rivarolo stream for 3.6 km through dense forests, fords and small bridges. The route continues to Casa Rocchi and the small Madonnina del Fosso, set into the rock. Along the way are three waterfalls whose old names have been preserved in the Oltrepò Pavese dialect. The trail is free and open to everyone; yellow dot markings enable visitors to follow it independently.

Two further trails each have their own focus. Trail 1 begins in Romagnese's village square and leads via Casa Picchi and the hamlets of Casa Ariore, Casa Ghiozzi and Casa Villa to the Church of Beata Vergine Addolorata on Monte Zuccarello. Trail 3 also starts in the village square, crosses the Rivarolo stream and follows the Via Francigena to the Oratorio SS Fabiano e Sebastiano.

Nature: Pietra Corva, Sassi Neri and Monte Alpe

The Pietra Corva Botanical Garden lies at an altitude of 950 metres on the slopes of Monte Pietra di Corvo. The distinctive, steep outcrop consists of dark volcanic rock. The garden contains around 1,200 plant species, arranged mainly according to geographical origin, significant plant collections, and ecological and environmental growing conditions. A visitor centre and educational panels along the internal paths complement the visit.

The Sassi Neri – Pietra Corva SCI covers 667 hectares in the municipality of Romagnese. Part of the Monte Alpe nature reserve also lies within the municipal area and belongs to the Natura 2000 network. It offers trekking trails for hikers of different ability levels.

Museum, churches and traditional village culture

The Romagnese Museum of Peasant Art, also known as M.AP.LO 4P, is housed in the tower of Dal Verme Castle. The Museum of Peasant Art of Romagnese is an ethnographic museum created through donations of everyday objects and work tools from the village's families. M.AP.LO 4P can be visited by telephone appointment.

The present-day parish church of San Lorenzo was built from around the mid-16th century and completed in 1728. It combines original Romanesque features with later Baroque additions and is considered a historical and artistic monument. The religious tour of Romagnese includes three churches and several oratories in the municipality and its hamlets. A chapel known as the Church of Gera already stood near the old cemetery in 1605.

Brüsadela and annual events

Brüsadela is a traditional flatbread from Romagnese. In the past, it was baked in a wood-fired oven to check its temperature before baking bread. The annual Brüsadela Festival takes place at the end of August and offers tastings together with typical local wines. On the last Sunday in July, the Monte Penice Alpine Group Day is also held every year, with a Holy Mass and a convivial gathering.

Getting there and choosing where to stay

From the Voghera motorway exit, Romagnese can be reached via the SS461 in 50 minutes; from the Stradella exit, the route follows the SS412.
