Holiday apartment in Ferrera Erbognone – Culture, Landscape and Lomellina

Ferrera Erbognone between the stream and Lomellina

Ferrera Erbognone combines a distinctive landscape with traces of a history reaching far back into the past. The Erbognone stream crosses the municipal area from north to south. Late Bronze Age artefacts dating from 1300 to 1200 BC were found along the stream.

The municipal area belongs to the UdP2 landscape unit „Lomellina: rice-growing plain shaped by the Sesia, Agogna and Terdoppio“. Along the south-western municipal boundary, landscape protection applies up to 150 metres from the banks of the Agogna. With its rivers and rice-growing plain, Lomellina forms the landscape setting of Ferrera Erbognone.

Historical Traces and Art

In the eastern part of Ferrera Erbognone, towards Sannazzaro, stands the preserved Casaforte. It is considered the only evidence that the village was probably fortified in the Middle Ages. The parish church of San Giovanni Battista was built in the Romanesque style.

The parish church preserves frescoes by the painters Villa from Vigevano and Annibale Ticinese from Semiana. On the right side altar is the painting Madonna del Rosario by Guglielmo Caccia, il Moncalvo, which the artist painted at the end of the 16th century. This brings together Romanesque architecture and artworks of art-historical interest in a single church building.

Palazzo Strada also preserves vaulted ceilings decorated with frescoes. The historic icehouse of the Strada family is a testimony to the rural civilisation of Lomellina. The spherical brick structure was once used to store food.

Memory, Music and Regional Identity

A Roman consular road ran north of the village, connecting Ticinum, present-day Pavia, with Augusta Taurinorum, present-day Turin, and continuing to Gaul. Another historical highlight is the major strike by the female rice workers in Ferrera Erbognone in 1912. This event inspired the folk song Il 24 di maggio a Ferrera, which is also known by the title La canzone di Maria Provera.

Festivals and the Flavours of Lomellina

The Sagra d'Ottobre is a gastronomic festival and the patronal church festival of the municipality of Ferrera Erbognone. It combines the cultural tradition of Lomellina, conviviality and local cuisine. The Sagra di Ferrera Erbognone takes place on the third Sunday in October.

The Cesta Lomellina is also part of the region's culinary offerings. It includes traditional cured meats, local cheeses, rice and rice products, De.Co. jams and sauces, pulses and traditional confectionery.

A Place for Days of Culture and Landscapes

The Ecomuseo del Paesaggio Lomellino is an open-air museum dedicated to the protection, enhancement and promotion of Lomellina.
