Cultural history between hills and town

Pistornile is the oldest part of Casteggio and lies on a hill and its slopes. At the same time, this area preserves Casteggio’s cultural traditions, which focus on the activities of the Certosa Cantù. A prominent landmark is the Monumento della Vittoria Alata: the 18.5-metre-high bronze monument commemorates those who fell in the First World War and was created by the sculptor Pier Enrico Astorri. On 21 November 1926, Umberto di Savoia, the then Prince of Piedmont, inaugurated the monument.

The Chiesa di San Sebastiano also brings together several historical layers. It was built in 1570, was originally dedicated to the SS. Trinità and received the patronage of San Sebastiano in 1590. Its façade was altered in the Baroque style in 1767. Inside, the church preserves a wooden choir dating from 1700 and a painting from the 18th century attributed to Bibbiena.

The Palazzo Certosa Cantù houses the Civico Museo Archeologico and the Biblioteca Civica with a reading room and multimedia area. At the MAC – Civico Museo Archeologico di Casteggio e dell’Oltrepò Pavese, the archaeological culture of the Oltrepò area has been treated as an important point of reference since its foundation in 1974. The museum displays grave goods from numerous tombs discovered in the Oltrepò Pavese and pays particular attention to the necropolis of Casteggio in the Area Pleba section.

Art, villas and historical traces

The Casa dell'Art Brut preserves, documents, researches and presents its extensive collection of Art Brut and Outsider Art. In doing so, it expands the cultural perspective on Casteggio with an independent artistic collection. In the hamlet of Mairano, on Via Castel del Lupo, stands the town’s most striking 19th-century building: Villa Marina, where Giuseppe Mazzini also lived.

Several villas connect architecture with special local associations. Villa Pegazzera is situated on a hill spur along the provincial road to Calvignano. It was built at the request of the Collegio Borromeo di Pavia as a summer boarding school; its original forms date back to the early 18th century. Villa Frecciarossa stands on a promontory above Praielle road and was designed for the Marchesi Botta Adorno in the Neoclassical style at the end of the 19th century. Casa Marangoni is associated with Albert Einstein’s stay in Casteggio from 1896 to 1899, when he was a guest of Casteggio native Giulio Marangoni.

The Palazzo Mezzabarba has preserved its original structure only on the side facing Via Baratta. On the outskirts of Casteggio stands the still-existing Fontana d'Annibale. According to tradition, Hannibal had his elephants watered there before crossing the walls of ancient Clastidium. Casa Arbasino is now the common name for the remodelled remains of a rural building complex erected by the Conventual Fathers of S. Paolo.
