Churches and historical traces

One of the notable cultural landmarks is Santa Maria del Carmine, an old church on Piazza Mira that probably dates back to the 14th century. The Chiesa Prepositurale di San Vittore is also known as the Duomo di Casorate and is the main church of Casorate Primo. Another historical trace leads to the Cappella del Lazzaretto: the votive chapel, built at a later date, stands on the edge of the former plague isolation site of Casorate Primo.

The feather factory of Casorate Primo

An unusual facet of local history is associated with the feather factory on Via Anselmo dell’Orto. It was founded around 1955 by Pietro Belloni. The factory processed feathers to decorate the hats of wealthy women, the stage costumes of the Moulin Rouge dancers in Paris and actresses, as well as the parade hats of the Carabinieri and members of the town band. The unusual range of uses extended from fashion hats and Parisian stage costumes to parade hats.

Sant’Antonio, procession and Podistica

Sant’Antonio Abate is celebrated in Casorate Primo every year on 17 January. The fixed date of 17 January places the celebration in winter and gives it a clear position in the annual calendar. The traditional Festa di Sant’Antonio includes a procession with pets and farm animals, tractors, and draft and riding horses. The Podistica, held on the Sunday before the Sant’Antonio festival, includes four running routes of different lengths. The four running routes of different lengths allow participants to choose according to their planned distance within the same event.

Active activities and local points of contact

The Associazione Arcieri dell’Est Ticino offers archery courses at the municipal sports centre in Casorate Primo. It also takes part in historical reenactments in medieval costumes and organises events. The combination of courses and reenactments expands the club’s activities from sport into historical representation. ASD Avventura Team Ticino runs a national survival school and outdoor activities and has its address at Via Don Colzani 4 in Casorate Primo. For books and multimedia media, the SognaLibro town library offers, through the Fondazione per Leggere, the loan of books as well as DVDs and CDs. The lending service therefore ranges from books to audiovisual media.
