River Landscape and Historic Routes

Carbonara al Ticino lies in the eastern Lomellina, on the edge of a terrace overlooking the alluvial valley of the Ticino near the right bank of the river. The town developed along an ancient Roman road that led from Ticinum (Pavia) via Lomello and Cozzo to Turin. The river landscape and historic routes therefore offer two different perspectives on the destination. Church, Art and the Via Francigena

The parish church of San Giovanni Evangelista was built in 1753. Inside is a wooden altarpiece from the 15th century depicting the Madonna and Child with Saints, attributed to the school of Borgognone. The building history and altarpiece provide specific historical and artistic points of reference for a visit to the church.

The access arrangements are important for your visit: there are steps at the main entrance to the parish church of San Giovanni Evangelista. Access for people with motor impairments is possible only via the rear and, because of additional, albeit low, steps, requires an accompanying person.

Carbonara al Ticino also has an information point for the Via Francigena. After prior contact by telephone, it issues certification for the pilgrim route. For travellers interested in historic routes and pilgrimage traditions, this provides a specific local connection to the Via Francigena.

A Flat Circular Trail to the Ticino

The Anello Cascine di Carbonara circular trail starts and ends at the cemetery car park in Carbonara al Ticino. It is easy to walk and completely flat. Along its route, it passes through a large part of Carbonara al Ticino’s agricultural area and the characteristic landscape of the Lomellina. The circular trail also reaches Canarazzo on the Ticino, where a broad gravel beach overlooks a particularly impressive bend in the river. This allows you to plan a day between agricultural landscapes and the riverbank without losing sight of the circular route.

Protected Nature in the Municipality

Nature is also a central feature of Carbonara al Ticino. The protected area lies within the Valle del Ticino Nature Park and also within the ZPS IT2080301 bird protection area, “Boschi del Ticino”. A Special Conservation Area (ZSC) extends across the municipality of Carbonara al Ticino. These protection categories add a clearly designated natural perspective to the landscape around the Ticino Valley.

Sacred Sites and Local Activities

At Cascina Campomaggiore, the oratory was built and consecrated in 1703 by the Carminali brothers. The chapel at Cascina Campomaggiore is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary of the Assumption. The former chapel of Sabbione is considered to be very old and was probably built around the year 1000.

The “Ali di Carta” municipal library offers book loans, advice and consultation, as well as activities for all age groups. The Autunno Carbonarese is a traditional local series of events with an extensive programme. In addition to landscapes and history, there are therefore activities to suit different interests and daily rhythms.
