Senago combines landscape, architecture and active pursuits. Part of the municipality lies within Parco delle Groane. Historic villas, the “Ville Storiche e Groane” route and culinary connections to the Province of Milan offer different focal points for days around Senago. The cultural traces range from Villa Borromeo and Villa Verzolo-Monzini to Villa Corbella-Martinelli-Sioli.

Parco delle Groane and Villa Borromeo

The park of Villa Borromeo covers 100,000 square metres and contains a botanical garden. Villa Borromeo stands on an artificial hill in the Senago area and developed over the centuries from a fortification into a villa di delizia. It is considered a site of historical and artistic interest.

Historic buildings and artistic details

Villa Verzolo-Monzini was built by the Monzini family around the middle of the 18th century. Around 1850, it was converted into a villa; frescoed ceilings dating from this alteration are still visible.

Fragments of a painted trompe-l’œil portal have been preserved on the interior façade of Villa Corbella-Martinelli-Sioli. The portal is associated with the perspective illusionism of Lombard Baroque residences. The history of the villa led from the Corbella family to the Martinelli family, then to the archbishops of Milan and subsequently to Angelo Sioli. The nearby Church of San Bernardo was once part of the villa.

The BICS-Biblioteca Italo Calvino Senago is also located in a historic building erected in the second half of the 18th century. The ground-level entrance to BICS is located at Parco Monzini. It can be reached via Via Don Ambrogio Rocca and Via Repubblica. For finding your way around the area, the park name and the two street names are specific reference points.

Cycling tour along the Canale Villoresi

The “Ville Storiche e Groane” route is a cycling tour considered suitable for everyone. In the direction of Senago, it runs along the path beside the Canale Villoresi. Villa Ponti can be visited along the route. The two kilometres along the Canale Villoresi form a clearly quantified section of the route; afterwards, you reach the Fornace Parodi, making this part of the cycling tour a separate route section that can be planned as such for the day.

Culinary connections and getting there

Salame Brianza and Salame Milano are considered typical cured meats of the Province of Milan. Saffron risotto, also known as risotto alla milanese, is a typical first course in the culinary tradition of the Province of Milan; one variation is associated with ossobuco. The culinary framework thus ranges from regional cured meats to a first course and adds another facet to the historical themes of the stay.
