Melegnano between history, nature and culinary delights

In Melegnano, Castello Mediceo, the Basilica Minore di San Giovanni Battista, Parco delle Noci and Lombard cuisine come together. Castello Mediceo is considered one of the most significant late-medieval monuments in Melegnano and Lombardy. The Church of the Nativity of San Giovanni Battista also gives the town a distinct historical character: on 19 May 1992, it was granted the title and dignity of a minor basilica. The time span thus extends from the late-medieval Castello Mediceo to the historical events of 1859, which are commemorated by the Ossuary in Melegnano.

The Basilica Minore di San Giovanni Battista houses a signed and dated altarpiece by Ambrogio da Fossano, known as Bergognone. The work was commissioned in 1506 and can now be seen in the first bay of the right-hand side aisle. Guided tours of Castello Mediceo are organised by the Guide Storiche Amatoriali of Pro Melegnano – Pro Loco.

The Ossuary in Melegnano contains the remains of French and Austrian soldiers who died here in the Battle of 8 June 1859 during the Italian War of Independence. The monument was inaugurated on 19 June 1904, following the Battle of 8 June 1859, and is the work of the sculptor Donato Barcaglia from Pavia.

Parco delle Noci, Sentiero di Leonardo and Festa del Perdono in Melegnano

Parco Noci is a fenced urban oasis covering three and a half hectares on the western outskirts of Melegnano. Parco delle Noci features an equipped educational trail with information panels about the Po Valley landscape, as well as a green classroom with an aquarium. Nature observation and clearly presented landscape topics are the main focus here.

The Sentiero di Leonardo is a circular trail. As a circular trail, it offers a route type in Melegnano that returns to the starting point. For planning a walk, this means that the start and finish are in the same place.

The Festa del Perdono is also part of Melegnano’s cultural identity. It is a traditional cultural and festive event held on Maundy Thursday and developed from an earlier event featuring the exhibition and sale of agricultural and artisanal products, as well as livestock.

The menu at Osteria del Portone features Lombard classics such as Milanese risotto with ossobuco, cotoletta and mondeghili. Alongside the historical and natural attractions, these Lombard classics add a culinary touch at Osteria del Portone.
