Linate was first mentioned in an official document in the 12th century. Historically, the town was located on the banks of the Lambro and on the road to Paullo built by the Romans. This gives visitors interested in cultural history two different points of connection: the river and the link to a Roman road.

The history of the Sant’Ambrogio church in Linate is particularly striking. It has been explicitly mentioned since the 14th century and is considered one of Milan’s oldest churches because of its patron saint. In 1938, it was elevated to the status of a provost church. The bell tower of the new Sant’Ambrogio church was dismantled down to the belfry in 1960 due to the airport’s requirements. The church thus combines religious significance with a concrete connection to the development of the airport.

Airport and connections

Linate Airport was established in January 1933 as a replacement for the old Taliedo airfield. On 21 October 1937, it was inaugurated as “Aeroporto di Linate, Enrico Forlanini”. The ATM’s M4 is relevant for connecting with Milan city centre: it reaches the airport from the city centre in 12 minutes, is 15 km long and has 21 stops.

Cycling route and paths for active days

The approximately 17 km-long Linea 7 cycling route of the CAMBIO cycling plan connects Linate with Paullo. It passes through Peschiera Borromeo, Pantigliate, Mediglia and Tribiano, as well as through parts of Colturano. Linea 7 has its own signage and is integrated into the public transport stops. On the evening of 23 May, the illuminated cycling and pedestrian route between the Linate M4 station and Idroscalo Park was also in operation after the lighting work had been completed. The routes of different lengths help you distinguish active excursions from shorter journeys in your planning.

Street scene, design and events

The local atmosphere also includes Via Rimembranze, which is lined with lime trees. In the central departure area of Milano Linate, there are installations created in collaboration with the Museo del Design Italiano of Triennale Milano. In Linate, you will therefore encounter both an established street scene and an explicitly designed airport area.

Events add to these varied impressions. At the 41st Festa di Linate, a procession with a brass band took place through the streets of Linate; the programme also included a classic car gathering. The All in Experience included a football tournament with four teams of six players each and a concert by young emerging artists. The 43rd Festa di Linate is planned to take place from 4 September to 6 September 2026 at Campo Comunale “A. Moretti” in Peschiera Borromeo.
