The Castello Scaligero di Monzambano is the oldest part of the town and stands on the hill. The Scaligeri built the present complex towards the end of the 13th century; the current complex was created by expanding a smaller earlier castle attributed to the 12th century. Today, the Castello di Monzambano is considered one of the best-preserved and most complete examples of castle architecture in the Mantuan area. The entrance tower houses a multimedia museum dedicated to the material culture, traditions, and cultural, historical, ethnographic, rural and archaeological heritage of the area. On a hill in the surrounding area stands the Chiesa di San Pietro, a rural little church accessible via an old stone staircase lined with cypresses. The Sito di Tosina is a prehistoric settlement dating from the Middle to Late Neolithic; well-preserved dwelling structures and settlement features are located there on extensive terraces.

Castellaro Lagusello between village and countryside

Castellaro Lagusello is a fortified village near a small lake of glacial-moraine origin. Almost completely intact defensive walls, four towers, sections of the battlement walkway and two medieval farmhouses characterize the village. The pile-dwelling settlements of Castellaro Lagusello include Bronze Age settlements at Fondo Tacoli and Fondo Pezzalunga. The settlement at Fondo Tacoli has been included on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Wetlands, forests and birdlife

In the Castellaro Lagusello district, gentle hills, meadows and orchards surround a small lake and its reserve in the moraines south of Lake Garda. The protected area of Complesso Morenico di Castellaro Lagusello extends over approximately 271 hectares across the municipalities of Monzambano and Cavriana. The Riserva naturale di Castellaro Lagusello includes a small heart-shaped lake, thermophilic downy oak and hop hornbeam forests on the slopes, and dry grasslands with abundant spring blooms on steep slopes and hilltops. A path created by the park approaches the wetland, with one section on an unpaved surface and another on a wooden boardwalk. The reserve is home to 99 documented bird species, including resident, migratory and wintering birds, among them the kingfisher.

Cycle paths along the Mincio

The 43-kilometre Mantova–Peschiera cycle and pedestrian path runs along the Mincio near Monzambano, crosses the regional park and connects Mantova with Peschiera. It is part of EuroVelo 7, which is also known as the Ciclovia del Sole. The 43-kilometre cycle path along the Mincio River passes through Ponti, Monzambano and Borghetto.
