Medole: Art, History and Events

Art and History in the Town Centre

The Civica Raccolta d'Arte comprises paintings, graphic works, prints and sculptures, mostly by artists from Mantua, from the early years of the 20th century to the present day. It is located in the complex of the Torre gonzaghesca, the last surviving testimony of the ancient Castrum Medulae, in the historic town centre. The Sunday opening hours of the Civica Raccolta d'Arte are 09:00–12:30 and 15:00–19:00; they have applied since 1 January 2025.

The Convento dell'Annunciata was established in 1455 through the donation of a private chapel with a house and garden to the Augustinian Hermits. It displays typical features of the late Gothic Po Valley; parts of the cloister with frescoes were restored by the owners. The parish church of Santa Maria Assunta was built in the second half of the 16th century and remodelled in 1750 based on a design by Paolo Soratini. It contains a 15th-century terracotta representation of the Compianto by Guido Mazzoni (Modanino or Paganino) and Titian's altarpiece Cristo Risorto che appare alla Madre, depicting the risen Christ appearing to his mother.

The Pieve di Santa Maria dates from the 11th century and displays Romanesque features; the surviving frescoes are dated to the beginning of the 15th century. Palazzo Scaratti–Minelli is a historic 18th-century aristocratic residence and is connected with the history of the Risorgimento in Medole. In the historic centre, austere Baroque palaces from the 17th and 18th centuries shape the townscape; their elegant marble portals from this period are considered an architectural feature of the town.

Torrione Gonzaghesco and Historic Landscape

The Torrione Gonzaghesco is the surviving remainder of the ancient Castello Castrum Medulae, built between 1010 and 1020 and expanded in the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries under the Gonzaga rule, which lasted from 1404 to 1691. The Torrione is 26 metres high and closed on three sides from a height of 8 metres above the ground. It is the only surviving element of the original medieval castle; the characteristic square layout of the town centre recalls it.

Circular Trail and Historic Landscape

The circular trail “24 GIUGNO 1859. LA BATTAGLIA NELLA PIANA” is approximately 6 kilometres long and runs through the central section of the former battlefield of Medole. Monte Medolano reaches 92 metres above sea level and served Marshal Patrice de MacMahon as an observation point during the battle.
