Gonzaga Arcades and Distinctive Architecture

The Gonzaga arcades in Gazzuolo were built in the early 16th century at the request of Ludovico Gonzaga. They served as a covered street and extend for 120 metres. In total, they comprise thirty arches. The arcades are supported by 29 Veronese marble columns, which differ from one another in architectural type and decoration. The different column types and decorations draw attention to details, while the length and number of arches make it possible to take in the street complex as a whole. For those interested in culture, the Gonzaga arcades are the central architectural landmark. Their historic function as a street and the Teatro Paolo Giacometti located beneath them provide two distinct focal points within the town.

Another perspective on technology and culture is offered by the Centro della comunicazione audiovisiva Collezione Oreste Coni. It displays projection and photographic equipment illustrating the history of audiovisual media from the 1920s to the present day.

Churches and Testimonies to the Town’s History

The Chiesa di Santa Maria Nascente dates from the 17th century. The Oratorio di San Rocco dates from the early 17th century and is designed in the Baroque style. In the case of the Oratorio di San Rocco, the early date is complemented by its Baroque style. In Gazzuolo, the Preda Pescadura is the only surviving testimony to the Gonzaga fortifications demolished in the 18th century. The Chiesa di San Pietro is considered the Gonzaga Pantheon.

Il portico delle cose antiche is a small market for antiques, hobbies and vintage items, held every second Sunday of the month in Gazzuolo. The Festa Avis is associated with Gazzuolo in mid-July. The Fiera di Santa Carità is associated with Gazzuolo on the first weekend of August. The market follows a monthly schedule; the two festival dates fall in different parts of the summer: mid-July and the first weekend of August.
