The settlement was identified in the peat bog of the same name in the second half of the 19th century. A large part of the Barche di Solferino settlement was destroyed during extraction in the pit there. Barche di Solferino is considered one of the best-known Bronze Age settlements in Europe. As a prehistoric settlement, it is regarded as having stood on a wooden platform or drainage structure. It is also one of the pile-dwelling sites of eastern Lombardy associated with the Polada cultural horizon. In 1938, Francesco Zorzi carried out a systematic excavation in Barche and documented the remains that had survived. Photographs of his excavations show the impressive wooden construction.
