Holiday apartment in Soncino: Rocca, museums and nature
A holiday apartment in Soncino opens the door to a place where defensive architecture, the history of printing and crafts, church art and protected landscapes come together. The almost completely preserved town walls enclose the historic town centre on the natural ridge for approximately 2 km and date from the Sforza period. This allows you to organise your stay around both culture and nature.
Town Walls and Rocca Sforzesca
The Rocca Sforzesca was built from 1473 onwards in less than three years as a military outpost for defence against the Republic of Venice. It comprises two fortified courtyards and four significant towers: the keep, the round tower and two twin towers. The structure is built entirely of brick. Together with the town walls, it forms a historic focal point that makes Soncino’s development during the Sforza period visible.
Museums of Printing, Silk and Archaeology
According to local tradition, the Museo della Stampa – Casa degli Stampatori “Soncino” is located on the site of the former printing house of the Jewish Soncino family. The former printing house associated with the Soncino family printed the first complete Hebrew Bible in 1488. The ground floor of the museum is accessible to people with disabilities and reduced mobility.
The Museo della Seta is housed in the former filanda and displays historic equipment used for silk production – from obtaining silkworm eggs to reeling the silk. A separate room is dedicated to bacological enterprises, or Seme-Bachi enterprises, producing silkworm eggs. The Museo Civico Archeologico Aquaria was founded in 1979 by the local Gruppo Archeologico Aquaria to protect, enhance and promote the archaeological heritage in the north-eastern part of the Province of Cremona. Its chronological and thematic tour ranges from prehistory to the late 17th century.
Church Art and a Long History
Construction of the Santa Maria delle Grazie monastery began in 1492, and the present-day church was subsequently built in 1501. The Chiesa di Santa Maria delle Grazie is entirely decorated with works by Giulio Campi, Francesco Scanzi, and Bernardino and Francesco Carminati da Lodi. According to the municipal schedule, it will be temporarily closed for restoration work from 1 July 2026.
According to historical tradition, the Pieve di Santa Maria Assunta is considered the oldest pieve in the Diocese of Cremona and is said to date back to the beginning of the 5th century. It houses four Christian relics: the Holy Thorn, a particle of the Holy Cross, the Holy Nail and the Holy Cradle. In the 15th century, the Santa Maria del Tinazzo chapel was added to the complex; it is also known as Santa Maria della Neve. The Chiesa di San Giacomo Apostolo was built in 1300 on the remains of a pilgrims’ hospice dating from the 12th century.
