Discover Casteldidone: Festivals, Cuisine and Historic Buildings
Casteldidone reveals its distinctive character through clearly identifiable festivals, regional specialities and historic buildings. On 30 July, the patronal festival in honour of Saints Abdon and Sennen, the Persian martyrs and patron saints of the town, takes place. The festival includes religious celebrations with a procession, as well as traditional secular and social events for the entire community. 30 July combines the reference to the patron saints with a clearly established festival date. The procession complements the religious celebrations, while secular and social events expand the occasion with further forms of communal celebration.
Festivals and Regional Cuisine in Casteldidone
The Sagra del Marubino celebrates Marubino, a traditional meat-filled tortellino served in three broths. At this event, Marubino is prepared by experienced hands according to a traditional recipe. The Sagra del Marubino received the “Sagra di Qualità” award from UNPLI in the Senate of the Republic. The culinary profile thus combines the dish with its traditional preparation. The award additionally points to the recognition received by the festival. Another distinctive feature of the town is melon cultivation: it began in 1958, when a farming family from Viadana introduced this crop for the first time to an area where it had not previously been grown.
Church Architecture and Historic Details
The Church of Saints Abdon and Sennen is a Neoclassical church with a Latin cross layout, a large dome and a skylight. There are three side chapels on each side; at the same time, the church has a single nave. The present church was built around 1840 over an older church dating from the 15th century. It was designed by Luigi Voghera, while the façade displays vague Palladian influences.
Villa Mina della Scala and Regional Cycling Tour
The Villa, or Castello Mina della Scala, was built at the end of the 16th century and later remodelled several times. The Villa Mina della Scala complex includes the Oratory of Sant'Antonio, dating from 1680. At Castello Mina Della Scala, a new and innovative project includes theatrically staged guided tours. The Villa, or Castello Mina della Scala, is located on the road between Rivarolo Mantovano and San Giovanni in Croce, opposite Casteldidone. The regional cycling tour “Nelle Terre tra Oglio e Po” leads to Villa Mina della Scala in Casteldidone; the villa is listed among the sights along the route.
From the Castle to Cascina Cavalca
Cascina Cavalca originated from the conversion of Casteldidone’s old castle. In 1309, Casteldidone’s old castle was considered a village surrounded by a moat and featuring a fortified tower. The upper part of Cascina Cavalca preserves the remains of the castle tower; on its eastern side there is a 15th-century cornice.
