Uggiate-Trevano: Springs, Routes and Culture

Uggiate-Trevano is characterised by a blend of springs, historic connections and sacred art. The Torrente Lura, the Strada Cavallina-Luganese and the parish church of Saints Peter and Paul each shape a different aspect of the town.

The parish church of Saints Peter and Paul in Uggiate Trevano dates back to the 16th century. Its single-nave interior was decorated with frescoes by Carlo Innocenzo Carloni in 1737. Villa Natta, a 16th-century villa, is also located in Romazzana, Uggiate-Trevano. Both buildings offer a glimpse into different facets of the town’s history: sacred painting as well as the historic architecture of a villa. The building and its decoration therefore represent two layers from different periods: its construction in the 16th century was followed by the artistic decoration of the interior in 1737.

The water landscape can be traced particularly through the origins of the Lura. The springs of the Torrente Lura are located on Somazzo Hill, in the municipalities of Uggiate Trevano, Bizzarone and Ronago. The Lura forms from scattered springs in the woods of Somazzo Hill. At the same time, the Torrente Lura rises on the moraine hills of the upper Olgiatese area in the municipality of Uggiate Trevano. In its initial section, the Lura drains wetlands, wet meadows and ditches in the Olgiatese area. The scattered spring outlets and wet habitats thus mark the beginning of the watercourse in the landscape of Somazzo and Olgiatese. The Torrente Faloppia rises between the municipalities of Uggiate Trevano and Faloppio. In the past, it powered numerous mills in the Val Mulini.

The history of the routes also spans several eras. The medieval Strada Cavallina-Luganese formed an important historic connecting route from the Milan area through the Mendrisiotto to Lugano. One section of the Strada Cavallina-Luganese runs along the Torrente Lura from Uggiate, where the stream rises, towards Saronno. The Dorsale Pedestre Insubrica was established in 1990 as a cross-border green connection and as a symbol of solidarity between neighbouring countries. Those interested in landscapes and history will therefore find both a medieval connection and a more recent cross-border project here.

Further traces can be found at the Tenuta de l'Annunziata. The agricultural cascina was restored by Francesco Somaini in 1912; a medieval-style tower was built at its northern end. Three Roman-era graves were discovered near the Tenuta de l'Annunziata in 1911 while the ground was being excavated. The finds are kept at Palazzo Somaini in Uggiate. San Giuseppe ai Morti di Somazzo, which is a diocesan sanctuary, is also located in Uggiate.
